    vics

i keep reading about vics. what the f is it?

    #2
lol, your not reading very much if you still dont know what it is...

jk, here ya go, read up

if you dont want to read all that..

"The intake manifold is very unique. The intake manifold system comes
with 2 plenums. The first one is the one you see outside the engine
when you see it. The second one is for the VICS system. The VICS
system is called Variable Interia Intake Control System. The system
works very simple...As the engine is at idle up to 4400rpms, the VICS
system has secondary plates in the intake runners. But when the engine
is in this operating range of rpm's of idle up to 4400 rpm's, this extra air
is held in the secondary plenum. So imagine if turbocharge? What ever
pounds of boost you are running, that boost pressure is held in the
secondary plenum chamber. The primary intake system works just like
the F2/F2T engine. When the engine reaches 4500 rpms, the ECU opens
the secondary plates, and release the held air or pressure to rush into the
intake ports, and allow the engine to get air from two different ways,
thus increasing the breathing on the engine"

VICS=Variable Inertia Charging System according to the factory manual. By varying the *length* of the runners, the torque curve is optimized to the extent possible with the design. long runners up to 5000rpm for better mid-range. @ 5000rpm, butterflys open to route the air through the lower manifold only - thus effectively shortening the runner length for better breathing/power at higher rpms.

no problem! the fe3 is basically the same design - its just that the quote is not entirely accurate - altho in a boosted application it might be (to a certain extent) true....

cool yo, thanx 4 the info. Ive never heard of that b4. very interesting. I was up till midnite trying to figure out what vics stands for. trust me I tried 2 figure it out for a while. I must have just been too tired and couldnt find it. The 1st Gen never fails to impress me, yet another high performance characteristic in our BP......like the manual says wen u first open it up: this is a large piece of intriacte machinery!

by the looks of that diagram you get higher peak torque with the valve closed, but a flatter, longer curve with it open
