Today I re-painted my door trims. I couldnt stand how faded they looked and how they would hold in old wax and make it look all greasy. So I decided to re do them.
First step is to remove the side mirrors and tape up the glass on the door. Then let the sanding begin. I used 320/600/800 grit. If you don't prep them well the paint will fish eye from left over oils on the surface. You don't need to go to bare metal but enough so its smooth and the paint has a semi rough surface to adhese to. Then wipe it down with some paint thinner on a LINT FREE rag. This will take off any dust and left over oils so the surface is preped for paint. I used 3M trim paint which is by far the best! it has a nice black textured finish that stands up to weather very well. I laid on 3 coats spraying light coats each time. It dries pretty fast. If you have any over spray just use a clay bar or the paint thinner in very light motins then wax the spots when finished. Here are some pics....
