    Galant Brake Upgrade

    Well, I felt bad that there were no posts on this thread category, so I figured I'd initiate and try to get it going even if it's something I did to my car a while back. I'm going to post some of these pics on my gallery thread, but thought it might be easier for some to stumble upon it here in case somebody was interested in doing this mod (although I don't remember all of the steps very well.... must be my old age).

    Anyway, I thought I would share a pic showing the dif in size between the stock front rotor and that of the Galant. Yes, I think I'll never ever warp it nor wear it out.

    heh heh heh.. you will if you go rallying... just not as fast as with the stock hardware. Certainly better than stock, no question about that. That mod's fantastic for the street though.

        nope. BF only. my buddy jeff did this on his gtx... looks pretty nice

            If you don't own a BF, then you shouldn't even read this section, it may confuse you. The BF GTX has 4.25" bolt circle, that's why the rotors don't fit the BGs.

              There's probably some way to swap bigger brakes on a BG but Gallant rotors isn't it.

                No offense, but.... the BFs have a 4.5" bolt pattern.

                The nice thing for us with BFs is that somebody must have sat in the j-yard a looooong time to figure out if this mod was even possible. So, if someone with a BG were interested, I'll bet there might be a brake upgrade of some sort if you can find the right parts off of the right cars.

                With the BFs, you have to use the Galant rotors, Escort GT calipers, longer lug bolts and some other standard BF parts (because you should redo your bearings during this mod anyway and so on...).

                If you find a car that uses a bigger, thicker rotor with a 4 x 100mm bolt pattern that has a "hat" so that it's no longer a "captured rotor design" like I think the BG is, and a compatible caliper system..... you might have something (like 15 minutes of fame for figuring it out).

                Keep in mind that once a BF is converted, 13" rims are no longer viable.

                  No offence taken. I wasn't thinking clearly about numbers last night. My point was just that it's different. Of course, that's not to say someone couldn't take the VR4 Galant rotors and have the 4-100 hole pattern machined into them. But it's not an upgrade, as the LX and EGTs rotors are pretty much that size to begin with.

                    Not an upgrade? Really.... that's too bad. The Galant rotors also much different ins overall diameter, but I consider it to be an improvement nonetheless because they are soooo much thicker and I bought better brake pads and I got the cross-drilled rotors. I know there's been concern over cracking rotors because they are cross-drilled... I would worry if they were the as thin as the stock rotors and if I rallied the car on a regular basis.

                    Hope you BG guys can find some sort of upgrade. Nice to have the extra breaking force.

                      You know i am not sold on the galant upgrade. I understand the rotors are thicker and will likely not warp as fast. But is it worth the extra rotational mass? Plus i hear its hard to get decent pads for the escort calipers

                        yeah, but you don't have to do bearings every time you do rotors with the gallant upgrade.

                          808 is right... the bearing deal is a real bonus. I got great brake pads from corksport that I'm very happy about. The only complaint was having to sand them down a little in order to get them to fit because of how thick the Galant rotors are. As for additional rotational force necessary to get them going around.... in theory, yeah, but with all the other upgrades to the engine, who notices it?

                          Besides, the additional mass is not far from the center of rotation. It's not like adding weight out where the tire is. I'll bet I'd get better gas mileage by MAYBE 1/2 mpg had I not done it but the trade-off, but with all the other mods, I've only basically gone up in mpg. I get 27 - 28 mpg highway and I've actually hit 30+mpg once.

                          That's about 5 mpg better than when I first got the car. Honestly, I'd get better mpg if I cut the lead out of my right foot when temptation gets the better of me. LOL

                          I also can really notice the difference in how well my brakes work. I would never go back. I'm glad I did it. It was more expensive than I thought it would be initially because I underestimated the cost of inner and outer bearings + labor (because I don't have a press), but it was worth it to me. Just my 2 cents.

                            I see in a photo on car domain, one guy make the same swap, but with calipers and rotors complete

                            Other easy swap is from a 626 GT, the 4 disc and rotors work in BF chassis

                              626GT? I did not know that! That's interesting (and good to know). I'm going to try to attach some photos of the work I did to make the swap happen on my car. Enjoy.
