Ok now, now lets clear this up...all you guys talkin bout having no reason to downshift into first. It's obviously none of you race or have tried it. Real racing, not street racing. In AutoX, you have to downshift into 1st while doing 30mph, and it's done by heel-and-toe downshifting. And to keep myself in game shape, I do it all the time on the street. You blip the throttle to the RPM your transmission is going to be in(rev matching), at the same time your foot is on the brake. The rev matching allows it to go smoothly into gear. Being in 1st gear coming out of a corner at 6000RPM is going to get you way better times than being in 2nd at 3000RPM.

Which would you rather put wear & tear on when driving around town? Your clutch or your brake pads? One cost 15 bucks and the other costs over 100... tough choice. He wasn't talking about racing, he was talking about driving around in city traffic... you don't need to go back to first when crawling around town IMHO unless you come to a complete stop.
