Want to seal water pump leak w/o replacing pump.

I don't want to spend any more money on my 91 and don't care about long term damage. I just want the simple fast solution that may cause problems but in the distant future. The car has actually behaved pretty good since I bought it a year ago but it isn't worth it because of the ugly and worn out shape it's in. The water pump is leaking due to age, it seems. The water is dripping down right from below it. What is good to block the leak well without clogging up my radiator and stuff like that too quickly? What, like a pour-in sealer liquid, has worked like a charm for you on an older car?

I forgot that I was in the Protege forum. I was talking about my Escort. I also own a 95 Protege and a 94 that I have been selling for parts for some time now. I just sold that Escort a couple of days ago. It was an LX and I actually got $800 for it with all the problems told to the buyer. The car has been overheating and the radiator fan didn't run. The windshield was cracked. The dashboard was mega-cracked. The seats were super faded but not torn. It had 119,000 miles on it. I made off like a bandit on that sale. By the way, I bought a new water pump and replaced it. It stopped leaking from there after that.

if the water pump is leaking out of the whole on its body then the internal seal has gone to ****. The only answer is REPLACE IT.

If it is leaking around the gasket (unlikely) then you could always lift it up and use some gasket maker and let it dry overnight.

You'll still need to buy coolant, and remove the timing belt.

I honestly don't see what the big deal is. Water pumps are $35 from autozone for the BP engines, and timing belts (which should be replaced at the same time) are about $25 if you look.

It's not hard. However, it's tedious and annoying. It takes up time and the space is limited. Once again, I've done it a few times on different cars and it's no fun. If something like a sealant worked, I would use it. I just decided on changing it to sell it since in the past sealants didn't work and probably only help to clog things up. I ended up getting a blessing for it with the amount I got for it. I let the guy know he had a new pump in it.
