mine did the same thing, and i drilled 4 holes around the shifter assembly, jammed a jack handle up from the bottom between the shifter and the ground to hold it in place, and ran plastic zip ties and speaker wire both around the assembly to hold it up, then sealed the holes with rtv.

if you wanna buy a whole shifter arm from dealership it'll run 280 at least.
**** that, just get a BOLT NOT A SCREW or two and make sure they are at least 10mm in diameter otehrwise they'll snap over time.
Drill a hole through that bitch and thread that ****er on. USE LOCKTITE OR IT WILL COME OFF! The trans makes lots of vibes and that nut will come loose if you dont' locktite it.
Had to do this on my protege, and mx3 so far....It actually reduced the play in my shifter A LOT when I did the fix. MX3 has like no play at all now, its pretty impressive

i know somebody already posted it up above, but that rubber bushing is the real culprit... if it were new, there are things that stick out on the sides that hold the shifter up, and the rubber thing sticks into the floor of the car like a giant firewall grommet. i didnt bother to get a new one for my pro becuz it went to ****, so why bother spendin $$ on it, but id recommend u doin that b4 drillin holes in ur car like a couple of us have done..

I used a large, stainless U-bolt and bolted the son of a bitch to the floor... and used lock washers to secure the nuts. I also wrapped the u-bend with this rubber **** and greased it up so there isn't a ridiculous amount of friction there.
