From everything that I've read, especially on the UK-based http://www.323gtx.co.uk (great site with awesome info, you should sign up there) site, which pretty much deals exclusively with the 1.8L GTX / GTR, even the AWD gearboxes found on the BPT versions rather than the B6T's or the non-turbo BP's have some pretty major issues. I've seriously considered swapping to AWD, but it really wouldn't help a lot in my own activities (AutoX and Roadrace track days).
I personally think the best thing to do drivetrain-wise for the BG-chassis cars is really to get an LSD and a good clutch in the G5MR tranny. Of course, if you're actively rallying/rallycrossing, AWD would probably help somewhat.
