    automatic rebuild

before you say do a 5-speed swap, let me just say i like my automatic and i would very much like it to be back to or around 0-mile specs. i'm afraid it won't go much longer if i don't do this...

do they sell automatic transmission rebuild kits? and if they do, does anyone have a spare auto tranny i could buy?

or will i have to succumb to labor costs and untrustworthy mechanics on this one?

I think you would be hard pressed to find one specific for the pro. I'm surprised you like the automatic. Of all the reviews I've heard about the automatic version none have been good. Best bet would prally take it to a transmission place for a rebuild or just make a trip to the j/y

If you don't know what you are doing with the transmission, don't tear it apart. It's a jigsaw puzzle, if you put it together right it will work great, more then likely it doesn't get put together right and won't work worth a ****. I would suggest tearing it out and having a professional rebuild it. Tranny shops are usually trustworthy and carry a good warrenty. Cost will come into mind though, you are looking at around 800 plus to have them rebuild it.

Otherwise if you are interested I've got a LX auto lying around, 110k miles on it. Shifted perfect PM me if at all interested.

As long as the tranny wasn't over heated then it should be a fairly easy rebuild for a pro. I granaded my tranny so bad it had to be pulled 4 times and almost every thing inside had to be replace. Damn tranny is heavy as hell to. Then if you don't set the valve pressure right the tranny will blow again. Most shops wont let you bring just the tranny they want the whole car and are usally pretty stupid when it come to these horably designed things.

Taking a WORKING tranny to a tranny shop is one bad idea. I think most mechanics will take advantage of any opportunity to scam someone if they are 100% sure not to get caught. There are many honest mechanics but you don't know which ones they are. See, if you take a working tranny in there and they are not honest, they will open it up and replace only the worst damaged parts. Since they know your car was working fine, they don't have to replace worn parts that are still functioning fine. That's especially true of the hardest to reach, hardest to replace, and most expensive parts. They only replace stuff that might have the car return to them within the warranty period. It could backfire and it goes bad during the warranty but it's a chance in their favor. Unless you have a lot of time and are very sharp mechanically, you should not do it yourself. You should also have a good variety of tools. There may even be some tools you're going to have to go rent. I've taken down a standard transmission and changed the clutch and just the putting in and taking out of the unit was annoying enough. Wait until it starts going bad and take it to a known reputable tranny place. If it's too expensive, just take a chance on a cheap place. At least it will have to do the work of getting a non-working tranny to work for the money they make.

The transmission is a f4eat just call any supplier of transmission part he should be able to have the seal kit. If you plan on doing it yourself good luck, i'm a rebuilder in a transmission shop and those are not the worst to rebuild but are not the easiest one.

Junk yard tranny, i just bought one for $325, with shipping.
that is the best way to go, It shifts perfectly and I installed it myself. If you do that, buy a fluid line flush kit, new filter kit, and high quality atf. You can also use auto transaxle from Tracer LTS or Escort GT/LX-E, you just have to switch the kick down/tv cable. It should aslo come with the torque converter.

Level 10 and Trans-go make kits for the f4eat that supposidly solve all our issues. Pheonix Hardparts sells a completely rebuilt unit for $650.00

Dont have any experience witht the kits, but will be trying the Transgo kit very soon. Pheonix is a good source. Have bought many Jeep transmissions from them over the years.

The '90 is getting up there in mileage and I'm getting a bit concerned for its F4AEL. I'm thinking picking up another atx for rebuild purposes may be worth while. Install new shift solenoids, anyone know what those go for from Mazda? And installing the Trans-go shift kit.
The trans currently has 174K+ miles on it and has a jantastic cooler.
Anyone here rebuilt there own? Or have a really cheap low mileage unit kicking about for cheap near Hayward, Ca?
                  Thanks!

Finally called up Japan Engine in San Leandro.
$450+ tax. Which here in Cali makes it a couple bucks and a few pennies shy of $500. *purchased an Accord transmission from them*. Considering the mileage/guarantee (~40K/6month), seems like a hell'uve a deal. Shops want 1week and ~2K for a rebuild. May be going the Japan engine route.

Might tear into the spare ATXs I have laying around now. Anyone have a good source for complete rebuild kits? Preferred TC sources?
