New Piston Rings - which side goes up?

    Hi.

I'm installing new piston rings in my '94 sohc.
Something happened to my work space and now I don't know how the rings were oriented.

There is an "N" on one side of each ring new ring.
The old rings have an "R" in the same place.

Could someone tell me if that "N" should be facing up or down.

    Thanks.

They face up towards top of piston.

Thanks 92dx for confirming that. I assume that putting them in upside down would be bad.

I wish that I were doing a performance upgrade of some type but I just trying to stop the smoke. I bought the car for $500. Other then blowing clouds of oil smoke, the car is pristine. I pulled the head to investigate and found that some debris must have entered the #3 cyl and caused the rings to fail. Im replacing that piston and all of the rings. The cylinder walls all look pretty good after a quick hone job. I'm hoping to re-assemble it and go. I have a set of Blizzaks and a ski rack waiting to go on it if this works out.
