if your a non believer then don't even bother, the lift is a very minor increase, duration increase slightly as well total overlap increases from 19 to 21 or 22° i forget now.

Originally posted by skinnyscortI really want this to work and I'm not trying to say its not true about the hp gains. First I measured the lift on my cams from the 93 donor motor and they were both the same lift. Then I measured the cams from my 96 motor and they were both the same lift. So I'm expecting the lift to be more on the exhaust cam and its not. Are the power gains achieved from a different duration or overlap? If anybody knows please let me know. Thanks
In the technical data section of the FSM, it specifies the lobe height of the exhaust cam as 1.7560" and the intake cam as 1.7360". I had a few spare exhaust cams, and used a set of calipers to measure them to pick out the 'best'.
The difference, as bpt323 said, is (relatively) very small - just over half a mm - but there definitely is a difference, and its one the motor likesOriginal owner: 1991 Protege LX (now w/SOHC) and a few more BG's ....

Ok Im confused in post #4 bpt323 said to find the tooth directly opposite of the top marked one the count 3 teeth to the left (counter-clockwise) . Then in post #14 bpt323 said to move it 3 teeth clockwise. Im confused on which way to move it. I assume you are standing on the pass side facing the cam gear side of the engine. When I installed it in my engine last night I positioned it as close to the stock cam position as I could (lobes were at the same angles as the stock cam straight up) I think that was 3 teeth turned clockwise. So with my timing marks all up(crank too) I fired it up and it ran like crap very ruff and it kinda sounded like the timing was retarded. It didnt want to idle or rev easy. Did I install it three teeth the wrong way? Please help me figure out what I did wrong.

You basically NEED adjustable cam gears to make it work and those cost quite a bit.
Why hasn't anyone tried buying the mazdaspeed miata BP intake cam & making it work? You can't use its exhaust cam b/c of the distributor slot, but an escort guy my roomate knew had that **** installed in his EGT and it made a **** of a difference.
and...the mazdaspeed miata cam is about 170 shipped from MMS....for a 6-8whp gain with NO tuning required i'd take that over hours of heartache & dyno tuning trying to get this dual-exhaust cam mod to work. I applaud the creativity but to me it just isn't practical.

teh MS miata intake cam is the same thing as the japaneese version of the 99-00 intake cam... Us got a slightly detuned cam thats about it.
you could order it from your dealership... Check the FAQ for the part number.---Has ClubProtege helped you in someway? show your support by Contributing--- Click Here---

ok cool, thanks. just scored a 99 head looking to upgrade the cams.
Edit: Can I get a link for that? Check the FAQ at the top of the forum and nothing.Last edited by 18sOnAiR; 09-22-2006, 01:03 PM.

I agree that the exintake cam mod seems to be a pain in the ass. I never got around to doing mine. There's a guy on here(mike 323) that sells performance regrinds for around 300. He claims around 12hp with his cams.it would cost you 20-40 for the exaust cam plus 200 for the adj gears. It might be better just to buy his cams and drop them in and not have to worry about how to set it up.
And if I'm not mistaken don't you have to swap to the solid lifter setup with the 99+ cams.1993 Protege LX-Midnight's shadow SOLD

Nevermind found Protege FAQ had it bookmarked in favorites.
Part #'s are : BP2Y-12-183 lifter bucket (need 16, and also 16 shims)
BP4W-12-420 intake cam
or BP5A-12-420 JDM intake cam (237° vs 241° duration @.003", either cam maintains the same 17° overlap)
BP4W-12-440 exhaust cam
For the BP-ZET engine:
BP2Y-12-183 lifter bucket (need 16, and also 16 shims)
BP5A-12-420 intake cam (from MazdaSpeed Miata)
BP4W-12-440 exhaust cam
