First check your alt/waterpump belt. Is your charge light coming on? Usually a water pump doesn't start going weak. They leak coolant until it ruins the bearing and seizes or falls apart. If you are getting very little to no heat for the heater and it is over heating but the alt belt is good, check your coolant level and condition. If it is good, take the belt off and spin the w/p pulley and check for seizure or noise. If everything is fine change your thermostat. Let me know what else you find. I've spent a few years as an ASE certified mechanic, so Im sure I can help a little with the diagnosis.

It shouldn't keep spinning, but it should spin. If it was a t-stat than it would still blow hot especially if it's overheating. What is the condition/level of your coolant?

Run it at operating temp and feel the upper and lower radiator hose. The should feel the same.

Did the car run bad like it was overheating? And how fast was the gauge going up when you flicked on the high beams or gassed it? This occasionally happens due to bad grounds, the gauge itself is malfunctioning rather than the car. If it really is overheating it ussually wont instantly go way up. If it is overheating its probably the thermostat, its not hard to replace really.

A car should never overheat while you are driving. If it does, your radiator is the problem, or a stuck closed thermostat, which we could conclude isn't the case with your car due to the lack of hot air.

Unless the thermostat sticks shut, and don't tell me they failsafe open, cuz mine didn't. Car never overheated fully, but i noticed one day it was running alot warmer than ussual, went away with a new thermostat.

Or I could learn how to read, since you said thermostat, so I concur. Lol
