Sort of in response to this post, just figured I'd share my findings, maybe it'll help somebody.
I had the same problem, the 91 323 pump was different than any other pump in the bgs. The 323 pump is on the left and a protege LX pump is on the right

Seems theres mixed imformation about the lx assembly fitting in the 323 tank, I had tried using an escort gt assembly, but thats not even close.
The 91 323 actual fuel pump is different, but the assmebly is mostly the same. I got an assembly out of a 92 lx, swapped the fuel gauge sending unit, I think the lx one hit the tank because it was bent when I took it out to take pictures.
