    No spark help needed

Hi i have been having problems with my 323 GTi 1.8 bp05, my GTi has been sitting without being started for a while and when i went to start it up it wouldnt fire up,

I have checked a few thing myself with the help of the haynes manual:

Checked the that the coil has power going to it which it does,

Checked the resistance of the coil as per my manual, (it seems to be the coil from the 1.6 a per the ohms of the primary and secondary match the 1.6 rather than the 1.8, which seemed to work fine and had no problems with it being the wrong coil before now)

The spark plug leads and distributor cap were a little corroded, i have replaced the dist cap and am going to replace spark plug wires soon, but as there is no spark from the coil itself, i tested it with the help of my dad seeing if it would spark against a grounded part of the car, tried it with just a screwdriver in the hole where the coil output is and nothing either.

So im assuming that the fault lays somewhere else, im not to sure where to go from here so any input would be great.

    Welcome to Club Protege.

You said the coil is getting power, but is it getting ground?

Hi again, im still having problems.

I checked the ground where the coil mounts, using the negative terminal on the battery with my multimeter. It got ground but not too good, im going to wire brush the area and clean it up. I also checked the other thinner wire that plugs into the coil, the thicker blue wire is getting 13V+ as before.

Also is the coil grounded by the metalwork that is bolted to the car.

One thing i would like to know is how does the ignition system work exactly, i wasnt too sure i thought it might help me figure it out .

Any info you could give me would help, i have a background in electronics so i know the basics of how the coil works to some extent.

I have been reading up on HowStuffworks, on ignition systems , quite a good explaination.

i forgot what is in the distributer but it either the ignition module or the cam sensor. whatever it is, if it doesnt work you will have a no spark situation

yea, best bet is to check your fuses, then replace the full coil/bracket/igniter thats why i did to my protege gt (1.8 BP) and she fired right up.

          are you pulling any CELs?
