    Squeak when car is started

Hey, I'm new to Club Protege, and I was forced to buy a 1992 Mazda Protege DX (I know, it's a DX, but I needed a car to work fast.. wrecked my old car [Echo... probably a good thing anyway).

I've owned it for six months now, but it's developing a squeak when I start the engine when the engine is cold. The squeak goes away when the engine gets to normal operating temperature.

The squeak stops when I accelerate, but resumes when my foot is off the gas. Is it my transmission?

That's generally a problem with a belt, most likely a power steering belt.

Ah, thanks... my trusty mechanic said something with the power steering was up, but I didn't have the cash at the time to fix it... Damn you rent.

You can always fix it yourself, you'd only need a couple of tools.

Yeah, sounds like a belt squeal. Check the condition and tension of your drive belts.
