    Plugged oil drain holes?

Just wondering if anyone here has experience with plugged cylinder head oil drain holes?

My 1990 Protege 1.8 SOHC smokes REALLY BAD on cold start-up. I just had the valve seals changed, but it didn't help. The smoking is worse after I top up the oil. Mileage is 207,000 km.

Anyone had blocked drain holes before? Where do I find the holes? How do you clean them out?

    thanks!!

Are you sure that your HG isnt leaking? Try doing a compression test and leakdown to make sure that theres no leaks there. If the seals were repalced and its still doing this, I bet your HG is done.

run ATF on one oil change & run a can of seafoam on the next oil change. or vica versa.
clean it out. & see how it performs then, its possible you have bad vavle guides, bad rings, clogged oil ring, dirty lifters. or a combination or 2 or more.

Mine does the same thing, smokes something fierce, got worst after I ran the seafoam through actualy, chances are the carb build up was keeping the oil from getting through. Is the atf suggestion a joke or are you serious, I aint never heard of that one.

atf has a lot of detergents in it, it will clean things out in a similar manner to seafoam.

hmm.... im do in about 500 miles for oil, sounds like a tip I should try out....

Doesnt hurt to keep it in there for the whole duration between changes?

i wouldnt. i'd drain a quart and put it in maybe 100 miles before the oil change.

naw, it won't hurt. put 3/4 of the quart in & drive it.. jsut dont' beat on it, keep the RPMS lower.

                        Thanks for all the suggestions.

HG not leaking... no oil in coolant, no coolant in oil, no coolant loss, cylinder compression all better than 175psi.

Neat idea the ATF... sounds kinda scary, but I guess I don't have much to lose. I had been thinking of popping the valve cover off and jamming a soft brush down those holes.

                        Thanks again!
