i have used gear oil in the past 75w 90... mysta316 (doent frequent here too much) ran low 12s on his unmodified trannys and didnt have problems staying together...

i also beat the hell out of my tranny for a year and it worked great.

for the amount... its been like 8 months since if delt with this but im pretty sure its 2.8 qts you need for your tranny (3 will do just fine)
There are no stupid questions, just stupid people.

the actual listed capacity is 3.2 qts, but it never all drains out... so ive heard that 3 qts will be fine/plenty.

the spider gears are part of your differential, you remove the speedometer gear to fill the tranny . but i too am wondering, how did it go? i've got to do mine soon, and my car is a rust bucket

peice of cake! why was i suppose to run into trouble?? it was easy cuz i already had the speed cable removed. it took like frikin 30 minutes cuz the oil was so dang thick and my funnel is not that big. If you have a pretty small funnel, my suggestion is to warm up the tranny fluid before you pour it to save time, but do it smart... i just used the heat off my 1000 watt work light (couldnt think of anything else).

DO NOT MICROWAVE THE TRANNY FLUID!! lol

ah. well the hard part tends to be removing the speedo sensor. how cold was it that your tranny fluid wasnt flowing? lol

the speedo sensor isn't that bad. you just have to grab it with a vice grip and pull if it doesnt come out at first...and be careful of the bolt hole tab.

i'd agree with warming up the fluid in a bucket of warm water and using the largest diameter hose you can fit in the tranny. i used about a 3' long hose attached to a cone on the top and had no problems at all.

ive got a G-series transmission sitting on the floor of my garage that would disagree with you... lol. the sensor is in pieces but still stuck in the trans. on my old escort wagon it came out pretty easy. its a crapshoot really.

copied straight out of a 92 pro workshop manual (i cannot remember who posted the link to dl this but THANKS!)

                          4. Add the necessary amount of the specified oil through the
                          speedometer gear case hole.
                          Specified oil
                          Viscosity: All-season ATF Dexron@lI, M2C33F or
                          SAE75W-80
                          Above -18*C (O*F) API service GL-4
                          SAE 8OW-90
Capacity: 3.35 liters (3.55 US qt, 2.96 Imp qt)

doesnt mention anything about dry or wet filling... i would imagin jon is right on the money with a wet fill.

also you use the spedo gear as a dip stick to gauge how full it is... right above the gear there is another ring and the oil should just go to the top of that ring

                            The Haynes manual says:

                            Manual transaxle lubricant:
1.5L DOHC, 1.6L SOHC, and 1.8L SOHC engines - API GL-5, SAE 75w90 gear oil
1.8L DOHC engine - API GL-5, SAE 75w80 gear oil

                            Couple of questions -

                            1) should I follow the Haynes manual for my 1.6L, or does someone have information directly from Mazda's workshop manual?

                            2) It was mentioned above that Dexron 2 could be used. Is this the case for the 1.6L engine as well?

                            3) Also, if it previously had gear oil, will there be a problem switching to ATF? Will they mix okay? Also, vice versa - ATF to gear oil?

                            4) If GL-4 is asked for, there be a problem using GL-5, correct? Something about the bronze inside? The only synthetic gear oil I found on shelves was a GL5.

                            5) One last one - the GM Synchromesh is apparently suited to GL-4 trannies, according to this article:

I've been reading a lot of good reviews about it lately. Anyone tried it?

Would like to change my MT fluid before Sunday's autocross, so any help will be appreciated! I'll be outside trying to loosen out my speedometer gear now - The last time I tried it didn't budge.

                            Thanks!

No. No problem using gl5. Gl5 is better, more shear resistance and all that. I use torco GL6 in both my cars and it's great.
