    Insulate Fuel lines

    Hi guys,

Yesterday i was reading some article and i decided to insulate my fuel lines. Here its the web page wich it shows a couple of free tips:

My question its wich lines do i have to insulate, here are a couple of pics of engines that are similar to my own, could you please show me wich lines should i insulate:

Note: I have a 1990 mazda protege LX 1.8 DOHC

insulating the fuel lines wont provide any sort of power boost. You would have to run the fuel through a cooler and get a significant drop in temp to see any sort of gain. Theres simply not enough of a temp drop from simply wrappiing the lines.

Alot of those tips are generally bad ideas and wont net much (if anything) for power. Synthetics are a good idea, but I wouldnt go so far as to say that they are all the same... thats just wrong and dumb.

Touch the fuel rail when your motor is running. Think of where the gas comes from, under the car in the shade, very cool area. I have touched my fuel rail when the motor is warm and its noticeably cooler than one would think around a hot motor.

Plus the wind that's blowing under the car keeps it cool. I don't think it would be worth it unless it was strickly a drag/trailered car. Even then I don't think it would matter much.

on certain cars like the newer turbo beetles (Diesel I know so temps will be a slightly larger factor as they run hotter from the higher CR's) they actually run the fuel under the car and through a cooler almost like a PS or tranny cooler.

As said though, this mod would be all but useless on our cars, as there are bigger and better things to spend your money on to make more power.

my parents own three turbo diesel VW's and...

              1. there is no fuel cooler
              2. they run much colder than gasoline engines. theres actually a cover for the oil pan with heat wrap material lining it to help retain heat!
              3. there are extra glow plugs mounted in the coolant system to help warm the car up during the winter. my mom had these crap out one winter, and that car took FOREVER to blow any heat from the vents!

I'll snap a pic of the cooler tommorow at work

I thought that they ran hotter b/c of the higher compression... but now that you mention it, I remember reading that diesel does burn cooler.

diesel is more efficient ... so it should be cooler in theory for the same power output as gas.

I knew I remembered seeing it... well we sold the beetle last week, but here are some articles:

Automotive news and professional literature in the digital library Springer Professional.

Got a bently manual from your parents owning one?.?. they list a fuel cooler:

guy talks about factory fuel cooler being too much

I'll get a pic of it once it comes back for service.

I should have said the fuel runs hotter.. hence the fuel cooler. In the first article I posted they mention temps up to 130 deg C. Thats 266 in F. Thats enough to destroy certain components. Hence the fuel cooler.

yeah we have the factory service manuals. what year was the car you had? they switched to a different injection system at some point, i believe all our cars have the older system. that could be the difference!
