    crank pully harmonic balancer

how important is the crank pulley harmonic balancer? i'm not running A/C or power steering anymore so i don't need the second pulley. i was also planning on machining just the single pulley out of aluminum so that it's a little lighter. can i make my own, or should i just stick with the stock one?

    Thanks

If you make one yourself out of aluminum, etc. then you lose the whole "harmonic balancer" part as it'll just be a piece of metal soooo usually its not a good idea.

if you wanted to go that route you would need to take out the whole rotating assembly and have it balanced.

you could have the stock one machined down and then balanced

that is also what i was thinking, but would it really make a difference? aka is it worth the money? i'm sure it could be spent better on something else.

i was looking for this answer too, and this is what I found, It depends on your Hp goals, anything below 300hp and u should be ok, however higher hp levels need the harmonic dampener to absorb the vibrations caused at these hp levels, and if u want higher rpm's also, if u dont have a harmonic dampener your engine life will suffer, no matter the hp level, even if the entire rotating assembly is balanced it wont eliminate the vibrations caused because of the dramatic change in direction the piston/crank/rods/ take on their cycle

the harmy balance is really a good idea, even if you build a custom lightened jobby
, most anything from a aftermarket from MX5/Maita will do the trick to keeps your oil pump working

So miata aftermarket ones work too? Do they still line up belt wise for the FWD cars?

you will also need miata water pump and alternator pulleys, but yes. they use a ribbed belt like the GTR, rather than a single v-belt.

                      Hmm...interesting for sure

I like ribbed belts a lot more than stupid V belts. IE; the pissant one right now that slips and squeals constantly. argh
