    Freeze plugs

How do I remove these? I am, getting an overhaul kit that comes with freeze plugs, but I can't find anything in the FSM about how to remove and replace them. Also, should I take these out before getting the block hot tanked?

    Thanks!

You will have to pry them out with a flathead screw driver. I have poked holes in the then used plyers to pull them out.

You don't HAVE to use it but I would recommend the tool pictured below. You drill a hole into the bad freeze plug and then screw this tool into it. You keep turning and the freeze plug just pops out by itself. There would be no need to start sticking screwdrivers in there and pliers to struggle with to take it out. Also, your replacement freeze plugs can be the ones with rubber on the inside and metal on the outside sold at your local auto parts store. You will get told it's a bad idea but I have used them with excellent results and so has the mechanic that recommended them to me. I installed it myself.
