ok, i bought this car from my grandma about 6-7 months ago. its in beautiful shape, slate grey with only 55,000 miles! well after it became undrivable due to the trans issue i found a green escort gt 5-speed to drive
so ive been driving it for about 2 1/2 months now.
so i caught the protege bug quickly, started surfing the forums here for modification ideas.
firstly, i got a set of zx2 struts and some ebay zx2 drop springs $100 highly reccomended
so my friend has an 86 n/a rx7 he had an extra b-code vaf layin around. so after throwing away $40 and an hour attaching a cone filter to it i thought i had come up with a cool, functional mod....
i decided to put it in diagnostic mode and tweak with it. after around 20 tries to get the idle right via the instructions on this website open vaf cover /ten+ gnd / key ON / start/ mess with gear. i also messed with the idle screw a lot.
after one drive with the idle fluctuating all over the place at stops and especially in neutral.
back to the stock u-code vaf....
no problems for about 2-3 weeks. i continue to mess with the idle screw every so often due to "vibrations"while in D or R.
ok so all a sudden i lose 1st gear... i stop the the car at ex. at a light. the car seems to wait forever to kick down gears while slowing. when stopped the idle is very low and fluctuates minorly. taking off the car will briefly rev to about 2,000rpm with little forward thrust (like driving a boat) then it feels like the clutch will grip up and were off (in 2nd gear mind you). then at about the normal point to shift into 3rd the car will shift directly into 4th for about one second (bogging but not losing power or momentum)then back to 3rd and then back to forth, finally. Additionally, the overdrive works, unless the motor isnt warmed up.
if that was hard to read i apologize. im not even sure i covered all the strange aspects of my problem.
strange happenings:
first, the car will start in first gear: 1% chance
secondly, the car will shift from 2nd into 3rd then 4th: 1% chance
thirdly, if i let off the gas momentarily right as the car shifts out of 2nd i can get it to stay in 4th when it shifts: depends on how much attention im paying
when shifting into D the car will buck and then stall as if the overdrive is staying locked or something. has only done this about 5 times. you can imagine that its a pretty big deal though. one good thing ,however, is R always works![Smilie](https://www.clubprotege.com/forum/core/images/smilies/smile.gif)
this problem also seems to be getting progressively worse. especially the stalling when shifting into D
so the last time it did this i parked it, and bought the escort gt. ive still been tinkering with the pro sporadically. keeping it charged etc.
