Mpg's on different b series engines

I'm looking at swapping all my suspension / brake / drivetrain into a mint mx3 I'm looking at.

My little bro has a pontiac sunbird with a badly rotten frame and 100,000km on the auto 4cyl. I'm thinking that he should sell the car now for $500 or whatever and I'd build him a 323 on my shell. He has money but won't spend it on a car even though he drives 1000km a week. I thought a cheap decent condition mildly modded 323 built for $2000 or less (including 600-800 for the shell with rims etc in cad$) might be good for him.

I was wondering what engines get good mpg and have decent power in na form.

I know the b6 is good on gas but really lagging in the power department, would a dohc b6 or 16 valve sohc one be much better?

How good on gas are the b8's? I could make a great na bp from what I've learned from my bpt experiences but that might cost too much?

This will mostly be a junkyard build, if it happens, but I want my bro to have a nice, reliable, non-leaking and non-rusty car. (car will be 5sp)

    Your engine opinions are appretiated.

    BP....nuff said

I get 600-630 km/tank right now out of my EGT.
A lighter body with a 5th gear swap and you will surely get higher

In order of best MPG to worse: B6, B8, BP. The scale is backwards when it comes to power.

Thanks guys, I was hoping for km/mi per tank or mpg figures as well
(stating whether they use american or canadian gallons)

        Eg,
The b6 8 valve that was in the car used to do 750km on 47L with a badly slipping clutch.

        Thanks

btw even a klze would be a mileage improvment on the pontiac 2L

My 93 with 4 wire o2 conversion and high flow cat/header and rest of exhaust stock I get 30+ MPG with 170k on the car. Once I did a 80-90 mile each way drive for work and got 37 MPG at 65-70 MPH lol. Then theres my 95 with 135k now and she gets 25 MPG but then again I think shes still alittle "sick" soooooo yeah. 30+ on a BP on the highway assuming all is working right!
**SOLD** 93 EGT with more suspension mods then your average riced out civic's # of decals + useless "bling/style/culture" mods! **SOLD**
95 EGT New beater! And gawd damnit shes NOT pink!

Stock, automatic 94 Protege LX (so BP), and I get about 24 mpg commuting to work (stop and go on the interstate) and 32ish on long highway trips. Figure about 2 mpg jump for a 5 spd.

Edit to add: That translates to about 320-330 miles per 11 gallon fill-up on long trips and 250-260ish for and 11 gallon fill-up in the city. This is all just now that I've gotten everything working properly again. When I had some issues (bad plug wires, crack in the intake tube, bum PCV) I dropped down to 19 mpg city, 27-28 highway.

stock 93 Protege DX 5sp with the b6. I do alot of highway driving (200 mile round trips) back and forth to school, usually driving 75-80, and I get about 33mpg, which about 380-400 miles to about 12 gallons. The only engine mod is the factory air box delete and a 3" filter. Keep in consideration that I have about of 150lbs of audio equipment and enough clothes that my car looks lowered. Take all that stuff out, and I might get a few more mpg's.

              Good luck with the build.
My car is a Vazondissan. Part Nissan. Part Mazda. Part Ford. Part VW. Part Honda.

1993 Protege - DX with LX upgrades. Still rockin' the SOHC. Custom HID headlight Retrofit.

2009 Mazda 3 - Finacee Car. No power nothing. About to trade in for a 2014 Mazda 6 Sport.

A LOT of it has to do with driving style. when I was breaking in my bpt, i stayed out of boost, drove the speed limits, and shifted at 4k at the max. With 205/50-15 Falken Azenis tires, I actually got 38mpg for one tank, but averaged 35mpg for about 5 tanks. this is on an escort wagon, so it's heavier than the 323, and almost double the rolling resistance with the wide soft tires.

Then again, I took it to a trackday, went through a tank at 7.02 mpg.

My 92 EGT, daily driven, 185,000 miles on the odometer, gets, in the winter, about 23-25mpg. This past summer/autumn, I was getting around 27-29, averaging ~80mph for 375miles per week.

I just got a '90 323 last fall, with a bad clutch.. soon, I'll be putting in a new one, and doing a good solid tuneup/overhaul on the car, and I will be keeping the skinny tires, as that will definitely help mileage. I'm aiming for about 40, but we'll see how it goes.

if you do some research on how much tires actually affect your fuel mileage, you'd be suprised.
