Boring open the 5th gear oil return port?

Anyone that has had their trans open has probably noticed the tiny hole for the fluid return from the 5th gear case.
Anyone know why the hole is so frikking small?

I don't realy think anyone would have to worry about damaging 5th gear.

      It'll be fine as is.

i wouldn't worry about your 5th gear either...even if you do magically destroy it...it doesn't take much to change out. Hell you can even do it while the tranny is still installed in the car.

I'm not worried about the gear. I'm concerned with stagnant fluid in there and not having things flow in the trans nicely. I'm putting a pump and a filter on my trans to house more fluid and to keep it cleaner longer.

nice! have you done anything to any of the other gears?
I live my life a quarter pounder at a time. And for those 500 calories or more, I'm free. I need FRIES! Two of them. The big ones. Oh, and I need them tonight. You're lucky the double shot of BBQ sauce didn't blow the seam on your nugget box. There she is, 2 pounds of pure beef. My dad ate it in 9.0 seconds flat. Check it out, it's like this. If I lose, winner takes my happy meal. But if I win, I take the burger and the toy. To some people, that's more important.

Nah. I don't feel like pressing off the shaft bearings. So I'm leaving all the gears alone except for number 5...it's getting swapped out.

+1 on that, The hole regulates the flow and controls the drain back of fluid.
I suspect keeping a measured amount of fluid in there at anytime gives it time to draw any heat away from the gears and allow proper lubrication.
