When i bought my GTX motor about a year ago i also bought a Escort GT head that the guy also had. He said the head had a set of Gude cams. im not sure is there a way to tell if these are aftermarket or stock? i dont really see anything on them that says Gude. i never seen a stock BP cam so im not sure. One friend looked and said they seem to be aftermarket because they are hollow but i dont know if this is a sure sighn that they are stock. the letter Z is stamped on them and some numbers like 50 or 60? i dont want to take it apart but i may have to... what do you guys think?

Like I posted on MT:
Most BP HLA cams are hollow- all seven sets of mine are. Miata, EGT, GTX, GTR. I believe Gude cams were ground from factory blanks and may not have had special markings other than the normal "26" or "05" (intake) / "06" (exhaust) numbering in the same spot where it says "BP"- if you rotate the cam, you'll see the numbers. Measure the lift and such, I'm sure the specs are out there, or you could probably PM srad2drag, since he has them in his EGT.sigpic

Look like stock cams to me.
But then again they could be stock cams reground... the only way is to measure the lift and duration.Last edited by Shades; 10-15-2008, 12:36 AM.

You said they said 50 and 60? Maybe you read them wrong. Stock n/a cams say 05 on 1 and 06 on the other. Right in the middle of the cam. And then dirrectly on the other side it says bp.1993 Protege LX-Midnight's shadow SOLD

"Camshaft materials
Factory O.E.M. cams are cast from a special Iron alloy. The molting raw material is poured into steel molds in batches of 100 or more at a time, the steel mold cools the molting material quite quickly, this quick cooling process has a self heat treating effect on the camshafts, and the heat treat process is no longer needed. The camshaft is hard all the way thru and thru, not just on the surface, and may be reground many times and not affect the harness of the material... This has made regrinding of the stock cams the preferred choice by many cam grinders, who want a bulletproof reliable material.
Beware of so called cast billets, usually produced in third world country’s they sometime have wear or breakage problems, as the metallurgy and blend of alloys are not as refined as the O.M.E. Factory process resulting in a degraded product
Camshaft materials cont.
Steel billet cams are machined from one solid piece of alloy steel, then pre ground to the basic configuration and heat treated, (42 Rockwell on the c scale), and then finish ground
to produce the end product. Gude Performance may be the only company to offer this type billet for the Imports at this time. (See fig.1)
Sand- cast camshafts are cast in a sand molds, and cool slowly rendering the base material very soft, and may be heat treated but the material will have less strength than parts cast in steel molds."

the only way to properly measure it is to measure with the cam in the headEscort GTR -- 11.87 @ 117.6 mph -- 320 HP / 325 Ft. Lbs. @ 23 PSI
