I don't know if anyone else has done this yet but I tried a larger oil filter today. I was told there wouldn't be any adverse consequences to doing so. Here are the photos:
It's just Fram# 7317 (Canadian Tire# 17-1747)
Stock spec is Fram# 6607 (Canadian Tire# 17-1746)
Both use the same "U" code base-plate (where it threads on), anti-flow-back valve and bypass valve.
The taller 7317 opens the bypass valve at a higher RPM because it has more filter media in it than the 6607.
I use the 2.5l V6 filter. Mazda had 2 filters they used on almost all cars from the 90s and early 2000. The big one on 2.2+ litres and the small ones for our cars and the 2.0 (I believe).
I ran the 7317 last oil change and had no problems with it. This oil change I put on the 3593A filter (the same filter I used to use on my Integra). It's a bit shorter than the 7317 but it's a lot fatter. Thread and gasket diameter are the same too.

hmm. I guess I'll try the 3593A filter next time. As for the mazda 2.5L V6 filter what model did that come on so I know what to look for in the fram book?
Looks like the same 2.5 V6 mx6/probe/626 I use. Ford festieve is bigger wide and long and works as well

BTW, I read on bitog (bobistheoilguy.com) someone did some oil filter disections and comparisons to major oil filter brands, and fram is basically crap. Cardbord endcaps and the surface area of the filtering media is smaller than other cheap filters like purolater.
Probably fine, but I dont use them, I use purolator premium plus. On the cheap side and good stuffs.
