snapped stud in head while tightening nut on intake manifold

i was tightening a nut onto a stud on thats on the head for the intake manifold and i overtightened it and so now i have a broken snapped stud, what should i do, or can i just leave it ? would it cause massive problems or a vacuum leak if i dont have 1 nut on the intake manifold? thx

I'd replace it. bcowie was suggesting to weld a nut on it so you can remove it with a socket. But, if there is enough of it sticking out, just use some vise-grips. I have broken a few of these intake manifold studs myself and that was while just torquing them to the proper values.

Vacuum leaks suck. Take the manni off and replace the bolt. Might not get a vac leak right away but it will appear sooner or later.

yep, i'd remove it and replace the stud with something of a higher quality.

oh well in that case, if its sticking out with the manifold off, then remove it, i thought you had snapped it off flush in the head...

grab a pair of vicegrips and get it out, or if not take a dremel and cut a slit across the head of it, and use a flat head screwdriver

if it's a stud, and you can do this for removing stuck studs also if there is enough threads, is:

take 2 nuts and thread them onto the stud, and then get 2 wrenches and lot the nuts against each other, now put the stud into the head and you can use a socket to tighten the stud into the head.

i had to do this to get a stud out of the head on the exhaust side just 2 days ago from my extra parts engine.

+1 on the jamnut technique. I used this method to remove and install all the intake and exhaust studs when swapping my cylinder head. Use a generous amount of penetrating lube.

Only finger-tighten the studs when putting them in. Use lock-tite if necessary. The NUT is what you use a wrench on.

90% of snapped-off studs is because people tighten them too much.
