    Air box design?

me + bored at work = new thread

So I was looking around at some of the designs online, and there's a few that caught my eye...most had a cone filter in a box with a 3-4" hose running down to catch air flow...

now i was thinking about using either a cone filter or a square drop in filter (auto wreckers & measuring tape) to get the proper k&n then building the box using fiberglass...kinda like this design

comments? ideas? suggestions? I'm trying to avoid the open element filter since they're not really efficient with pulling in cool air.

My dad has something similar to what you are saying on his Ford Lightning. He has a 5 sided box that has his cone filter element in it. The top is open. The bottom has a tube going to under the bumper where there is a rectangular thing to catch fresh air. He told me that the box the filter element is in needs to be open because if not it will create a vacuum and suck up extra moisture and debris from the outside.

^^I think your dad is defeating the purpose of having a airbox by leaving the top open to suck hot engine air. Everything follows the path of least resistance and since it more then likely a shorter path for the hot air then the cold air, then maybe its not working so well

The OE style air boxes are completely sealed and have a small tube run some where like behind a headlight or in a fender and sometimes they have an inlet right at the front of the hood. Seems to work for them. A perfect example is a recent customer brought me a VW Passat with a 1.8T. Wanted me to check the air filter, that airbox was so full of debris, but mostly because he had never opened the damn thing to check the filter on it. That was a completely OE airbox system and it had the air inlet up by the front of the hood I think. Its only really a problem if you neglect to check it and it fills up like that guys airbox did. A little bit of moisture is fine for an engine, and will in fact keep the combustion chamber clean. For an extreme example of this a car that has had a blown head gasket and has been burning coolant always has nice clean pistons from the moisture breaking the carbon off.

1--The debris is not going to hurt anything, it wont go past the filter
2--A little moisture is not going to hurt the engine anyway, just dont put your tube where it will drown in water.

I think the path of least resistance is not valid in this situation if you have an air scoop below your bumper gathering air and cramming it into the air filter area as your drive displacing warm air from the engine compartment.

Well I do believe I'm going to try to construct an air box using those links you posted.

I'm going to modify the stock box, enlarging and maybe relocate the snorkle system...the snorkle above the rad doesn't even do anything afaik...just won't digest water lol.

I just got a free eclectic leaf blower from a dude at work, the things a piece of junk but it looks like there is some tubing and a few end attachments that someone could rig up to make an air inlet.
Just a thought for a cheap way to do it if you can find a free one or something.

i think i know the type of tubing you're talking about! my friends fiancee is great with fiberglass...so we'll probably screw with something after the winter and see what we can come up with.
