    Strange Noise, Hub issues?

I have this noise, it sounds like mud tires. It gets louder as i go faster, stays the same if i kick it into neutral, and is really annoying.

Today i just replaced both axles, axle seals, and tie rod ends. i just did the front wheel bearing about a year ago also.

When shaking it down, it has no play 12-6, but from 3-9 i can feel a little play, and maybe a slight clicking? It was pretty faint if its there. Could be the tie rod inners causing the play, but the click is bothering me.

My guess is bearing again or hubs. The wheel bearings didnt sound like this last time they were bad though. Im probably going to replace the whole front hub and bearing assembly.

Let me get some opinions please!

Put it on jackstands, start it up and put it in gear. Take a stethescope to the various areas... Diff bearings, intermediate shaft bearing, wheel bearing..

When you say "mud tires" I assume you mean the loud drone that comes from them when driving on the highway?

I've got a similar noise coming from my grey 4WD.
I'm about 80% sure that it's coming from the passenger front wheelbearing. That'll get fixed right soon. Hopefully it goes away, because if it doesn't, it's something in the GTR gearbox...

I know its not the same car but my I-Mark had gone thru 2 bearings in less than a year. What I found out finally the entire knuckle where the bearing was pressed in was bad and found a replacement at local yard for next to nothin. Hadnt had the problem since and its been almost 2years? So keep that in mind?

Sounds like a wheel bearing. Had this problem in a 89 Oldsmobile Delta 88.

dean, I was thinking the same thing. the bearings damn near fell out when I changed them last, but the new ones pressed in fine. I was probable just going to get a decent shape hub assembly and put new bearings in it again

Thats what I would do. Just get a new hub assembly and some quality bearings.

Could be cupping of the tires too, how do they feel? Sounds like a tie rod is loose but it wouldnt cause that kind of noise, not in my experience anyways.

tires are fine. No uneven tread wear or anything. I even rotated them.

I was also thinking it could be spindles. May as well get the whole shebang tho

                    how'd this ever turn out?

I just swapped out a new bearing and hub into a spare knuckle, hoping the noise would stop. Unfortunately, no luck. Shiny new hub, and wheel studs, though! The noise does go away when turning one direction, though (I can't remember which, d'oh! I think to the right, but I can't remember for some reason.)

I can grab the CV joint where it goes over the intermediate shaft, and I can see and feel a bit of play there.

I think that it's the support bearing for the shaft. Anybody got a part number for it? I've got my own press, I just don't know what the bearing is.

Anybody know if the 4WD intermediate shaft is exactly the same as the FWD ones? I might have a spare around, if they are.
