Just run a remote oil filter kit on it, and most of them use that 5.0L Mustang filter which holds about 1L... that's more oil in your engine! Better lubrication cause it takes longer to dirtier the oil cause there is more of it. Plus the bigger filter sorta acts as an oil cooler cause there is more surface area to air than the small Mazda filters.

If you're getting ready to swap a motor this would be the time to jump into your engine bay and put one in while there is nothing there!

I run a fram 3593A oil filter it's almost triple the size and just screws right up in there no problemo, the previous owner used those and changed the oil every 3k miles he had it 100k miles, has about 180k miles, that thing runs just super great! burns very little oil at WOT, I love it! so I just buy fram 3593A's for it since that's what was run on it for so long and the filter is just massive compared to stock.

I started usin the Honda filters (We used ACDelco filters, and all the Hondas were PF1127) when i was still workin @ the shop, then switched over to the KL Filters for the escort and the P5.. Havent done a bigger one on the KL yet..

Whats the purpose of the bigger filter? I see it calls for a PH2876 (champ number)/LF113F (federated auto parts number) but it looks like it had a napa filter comparable to the champ 2867 filter which is slightly larger. As someone else stated the 2867 is on many honda's and quite a few nissans. Is the larger filter even worth putting on?

            One man's thoughts!

I have every faith that Mazda's engineers know exactly what they're doing, even though it's tempting for some of us at times to second-guess them and think we know more/can do a better job than that of which they're capable. Oil filter capacity seems to be sized primarily according to engine displacement, at least for passenger vehicles. Furthermore, they have to be large enough to maintain adequate filtration for at least as long as the specified oil change interval and even somewhat beyond in recognition of the fact that some uncaring, abusive individuals will not follow proper maintenance proceedures.

For 3rd Gen Proteges (as well as the Mazda3), the FSM recommended oil change interval is 7,500 miles (12,000 km) for normal driving conditions (USA), and 5,000 miles (8,000 km) for Canada and Puerto Rico and (Unique driving conditions) USA. Presumably, if the recommended oil change intervals are followed, the OEM filter should be more than adequate. No one could seriously think that Mazda would fall short here as their reputation is on the line, and why would they not follow good engineering practice?

It's instructive to note that both the Protege and the 2004-2008 RX-8 engine use the same oil filter (the RX-8 is essentially a small displacement 1.3 L engine). In the case of the MSP, the stock Protege oil filter is used but an oil cooler is fitted in addition. IMO, even in the case of FI engines, A larger oil filter would not be nearly as beneficial as more frequent oil changes. On the other hand, the 626 V6 2.5 L engine uses an oil filter ~ 20% larger in volume than that used by the Protege (the 2009-2010 RX-8s also use this filter). The Mazda3 oil filters, spin-on (2.0 L) and cartridge (2.3 L) are both larger than that of the Protege and they are both equally sized to fit the larger 2.3 L engine.

That being said, I can think of at least one situation where an oversize filter might have some practical purpose. The use of synthetic oil permits longer oil change intervals at least if the oil manufacturer's recommendations are followed. In such cases it might be advantageous to fit a larger filter to accomodate the longer service interval, although for really extended periods it might be necessary to change the filter in-between oil changes as, for example, Red Line recommends.

Notwithstanding the above, although I use Red Line oil and change it every 5,000 miles (much too frequently and I should go to 10,000 mile changes), I use an oversize oil filter from the 626 V6. Why? I don't know, but hey, you never know when that extra little bit might come in handy.

That's my opinion, but of course I could be wrong.

more filter area=better IMHO. I've noticed my oil stays cleaner longer on the filters I run, the stock filter, my oil was black in 2k miles, now I go 3k miles my normal interval for a change and it's still like dark carmel. that's just my .02 worth yes the stock filter works, but it's not any more expensive to get the bigger filters so I just get the bigger ones :D

I use Mobil1 Filters. The Fram filters for the BP/B8 is barely larger than your thumb, I do not use that for various reasons. The Mobil1 Filter is considerably larger. The only thing I would worry about with going too large with a filter is there a possibility to lose pressure from too large of a filter?

Within the range of possible oversize oil filters available, the extra internal filter volume should not cause a loss in oil pressure. Since the filter must have an anti-drainback valve the engine won't start dry and extra oil should be added to the crankcase to compensate for the increased filter volume.
