    flywheel machining

ok so im having my stock flywheel machined by a buddy in classes. he was telling me about different finishes and we were both confused about what type of finish should be put on a flywheel. i told him that i think it just needs to be as smooth as possible. but i want some clarification. anyone who knows how to machine, what type or equipment should he use and what type of finish?

ive done them on a brake lathe before, but you should really have it milled, it should look like a rotor with all the swirls in it...

Wet stone finish... smooth and straight, and machined to the right step or cup. At the machine shop we used a diamond impregnated stone and coolant.

Have some weight cut off it, I had my flywheel shaved down to 14lbs.

              Yep: http://www.wihandyman.com/forum/show...3&postcount=13

But it was roughly 15lbs. I've driven an 9lb flywheel in a BH and that **** was so frustrating to drive on the street.

how much material did you take off the back? did you take much off the clutch side?

Well, you have to measure with a vernier from the surface where the bolts holes are (where the clutch mounts) to the flywheel surface... and when your buddy grinds the flywheel surface flat, he must then put the same measurement back between the two surfaces... so he must then grind the surface of the clutch mounts.

I'm tired, so I don't know if that made sense.

Nothing was taken off the clutch face, that side was just surfaced.

would he have to do that in 2 places? where the flywheel bolts to the crank, and then the bolt holes for the pressure plate as well?

Ok take a look at this picture... this is called a cupped flywheel, there is the other one called a stepped flywheel. So the clutch face was machined, yes. Also look at where the dowel pin is, the posts on the outer edge where the clutch bolts up to. That was also machined cause if you machine the clutch face then the cup gets deeper... soooo, you want to machine the outer posts back down to the specifications. Correct me if I'm wrong and if my memory serves me correctly this one is .787". It's been a long time since I've machined any. Pull the pin out first before you do... lol. You also don't want to leave a lip on the outer edge of the clutch face against the posts... hug that grinding stone right in there.
