    Changing valve seals

well I bought the tool too compress the valve spring with the head still on the block.I got four of them changed and was working on the fith one when I was putting the little metal clips on to hold he valve sping on the valve (which by the way for some reason seems to be a bitch) one of them wasn't in all the way and I released the pressure from the spring it then popped out and went in a hole in the head which i'm think makes oil go to the bottom end I gotta change oil pans anyway so am I correct on thiscause I stuck a magnet in the hole as far as the magnet was long and there seemed to be no end to the hole...i'm hopin the metal retianer is in the oil pan

Valve spring retainers are fun to put back in, aren't they? God, how I loathe them. Anyway, definitely check your oil pan for the rouge retainer. Drain the pan first (should be obvious, but just in case), if possible get an oil container with mesh of some sort over the hole, or put up some yourself (use a fine mesh, as the retainer is quite small). If you don't catch it there, check the pan thoroughly when you drop it. If you still don't see it, I'd check the oil you drained again just to make sure, then you're probably going to have to pull the head. That, or take your chances and start the car with the retainer in an unknown location. Do this at your own risk. I do not recommend this; I am merely stating your options. Maybe nothing will happen, but I wouldn't bet on it. Metal doesn't compress very well, and a piece of metal bouncing on top of a piston does bad things to your combustion chamber.

A small tip that worked really well when I did my head, was to use vaseline on the little clips. That made them stick to the valve stem until I got the spring in place. Made all the difference.

damn that sucks you should take a pic of where it fell, i think there's a oil flow diagram in the FSM that'll show if it has flow and where it may go...

sorry to drag up an old thread but whats a good tool to use to remove them. Ive been searching around but I don't want to spend anymore then 30$
                    The head is alredy off

Any luck with the c clamps? http://www.ebay.com/itm/8-Inch-Valve...e103aa&vxp=mtr

                    I heard these were **** http://www.ebay.com/itm/Universal-Au...d4b53c&vxp=mtr

And what about the lever style: http://www.ebay.com/itm/KD-912-Valve...a43e13&vxp=mtr

I tried this method http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=es6raocApZQ, but the springs are say to hard to push down. I might go to my shop and machine something up to get more leverage to push them down.

Thank for any info you guys have to offer.
