after i was tipped off in the "what did you do today" thread, i decided to pick up a gear drive starter for my EGT. i grabbed a MINT looking one on ebay for $30 shipped, out of an 03 miata.
these starters are lighter, draw less current, and have higher cranking torque! they are also a little more compact.
stock BG starter - 9 lbs
03 miata starter - 6 lbs
i wont get a chance to actually use it for a couple days (waiting on an ignition coil....), but i'm pretty excited to replace my current starter which likes to randomly get stuck engaged at the worst possible times
so if you guys ever need to replace your starter, or want to easily save 3 lbs, try to find one of these. theres another one on ebay right now for $30. they are easily discernable by appearance, check out the pics below:
