    clutch or tranny bad?

    ok guys i searched but couldnt find anything out.

    well i cant tell if my clutch is bad or the tranny.

    when i start out in first the shift to second it grinds but when i come to a stop i put it in neutral and put it first it grinds bad but those are the only two gears that grind. -when i shift i put the clutch pedal to the floor, i dont ride the clutch neither-

    sorry for the noob question but this is my first 5 speed.

    While it's at full stop idling, put the clutch in and put in gear. If the RPM stays the same and the car doesn't try to roll forward, then the clutch is disengaging all the way and not causing the grind problem.

      what part of KS are you in? sounds like the 1st and 2nd synchros are going out if not already gone

        could be your clutch master or slave cylinder failing as well causing it not to come out of neutral all the way as well.

        easiest bet is to check both for leaks, and if its good there, then i'd recommend inspecting your trans fluid to make sure its at the proper level, or even possibly change the fluid, i've heard that helps grinding.

          im in topeka ks and i talked to a friend thats a mechanic and said its probley the synchros.

            the guy i bought it from said his friend put a new clutch in it a few months back. i think he did a crappy job because my speedo was broke and the 10mm bolt that bolts the speedo to the trans is missing.

            my brake/clutch fluid is at the min. level, im not sure if that helps

            jay it idles pretty high but it idles at around 1200 then when i put it in gear it goes to 1600

              yeah man, sounds like syncros, but if its low on gear oil throw a quart in there see if it helps. and 1200 is pretty damn high. you should be idling at about 750.

                well crap...is it more expensive to rebuild a tranny or just buy another one from a junk yard?

                oh and something else started today....when im coming to a stop i always put it in neutral so im not riding the clutch but when im fully stoped and pull the shifter my way to put in first it makes a whining noise...anybody know whats causing that
