    Dual stage Thermostat

So just helped my dad with a thermostat swap on his 89 B2600i and it turns out Mazda use to install dual stage units.

There's the larger port and a smaller port, with the markings 85/88*C

They're supposed to be great for engines with iron blocks and aluminium heads, less thermo shock from what i've been reading.

Anyone ever try to use one? there's still an active part number of 8AK1151719U for the thermostat.

    Pics borrowed from mx6.com

I purchased one as NOS a while ago and installed it on the current BP in the bg. The car ran warmer with it installed compared to the autoparts stores stats. When I was doing my winter rad flush/refill I replaced it with a generic one and temps went back to normal.

I was just going to run a single stage 180* thermostat in my bpt, but i figured this was a neat find lol, never removed a dually from a car before.

would anyone recommend the dual stage over a single stage since they're OEM unlike the single stage???

            breakdown on its purpose.

screenshot is from the 4wd protege fsm, the US fsm doesnt have this picture and graph, but the opening temps are the same. $25 from the dealer.

all my mazda f2's and f2t's also use them stock. sad thing is every parts store sells a basic single stage as a replacement. and it doesnt work correctly in a system that is designed around the dual stage thermostat. so you either get it from mazda, or its wrong. lol
