    problem adjusting idle speed

I was going to adjust my race car's timing yesterday, but when I went to lower my idle speed from 2500 rpm, my idle screw on the throttle body bottomed out at 1500 rpm. How can I get it to idle around 850 rpm?

    Thanks

one of the air bypass valves is probably stuck, or you got a vac leak somewhere

you also have to put the car in diagnostics mode (jump TEN n GRN).

Sometimes not having the proper timing values will cause a high idle as well.

I think Yunv is right too, IAC is probably stuck open (crappy wax seal afaik)

Well, i figured out my idle speed (it needed the ten and ground like Mazda_Powered said.) The thing is, my car didn't like the advanced timing, and stalled out. So I guess it will stay at ten degrees.

hmm it shouldn't stall out on you like that...is there a check engine light at all?

My car runs smoother as I increase my timing, and idle real rough if I retard the timing...

what way did you move the distributer? Clockwise or counter clockwise?

looking at the disti cap, advancing it would be spinning it clockwise (towards the firewall)

No wonder!!!! I was turning it counter clockwise because the miata performance handbook I have says that I needed to turn it counter clockwise. Must be different between miata and protege.

Also, off topic, but yunvmyegt reminded me when he said he was running megasquirt. I was driving my 323 yesterday and I ran it all the way past the 8000 rpm mark, and didn't hit the rev limiter!?! How is that possible with stock ecu? Unless I have a non stock ecu in my car, but I don't know, as I bought it like this. hmmm

your tach is probably not reading proplerly lol, won't rev to 8k on the stock computer...might go to 7,400rpm max then fuel cut should happen.

My recommendations, don't go over 7,400 though...BPs are supposedly only balanced just past 8,000rpm (It's been a while, so I might be off) and you can get some nasty valve floating at that RPM too.
