Cheap Interior Mods, Like REAL Cheap

    Howdy all,
Anyways I'm sorta strapped for cash right now, like all college students are, but I was wondering about any cheap mods I could do myself to the interior or exterior that wouldn't take to much time. It seems that there should be some things you can do to make a car really cool, using inexpensive, and sometimes household materials. Like probably under 50 bucks per mod, or so. An example of what I was thinking was maybe replacing the carpet in the car with something that would be a little mor plush, like household carpet. Or maybe trying to find some cheap leather seats at the junk yard. Anyways, any ideas would be great. Even if it just something small.

Yeah the home carpeting is way to ghetto, but like what T4 said earlier go find an MX-3 in the J/Y grab the seat and carpet.

I'm in the same boat you are man, but there are somethings you can't cheep out on, it's bit me in the ass many times.

Just keep an eye on the For Sale forums, get in go with or local J/Y, take you time and do your research.

to the original poster- if you're that broke, save your money for something worthwhile instead of doing ghetto-ass mods you're just going to regret later.

You need to give a little more info on what kind of 1st gen you own. Is it auto or manual, DX or LX, interior color, etc....???

                  pics are even better.

But yeah MX-3 stuff is nice... drop some extra padding under the MX-3 carpet for that plush your looking for.

Power options out of an LX (if you dont already have them all) are always pimp too.

Well, it has power everything but seats and mirrors. But there are power hookups for mirrors and a switch for power mirrors, so I think all I would need to get are the mirrors themselves.
A little more on the car (I'll get some pics up soon), its a 92 LX. Blue and tan interior, with some black on the dash, stero, shifter, etc. what would it be like if I spraypainted the rest of the blue plastic black (like the door columns, seatbelt track, etc). Would it be ok just to use regular black spraypaint, or would I have to get something special.
One other thing I might want to do, is change the sun roof to a moon roof, if its not to involved. Would I have to remove the whole track to do that, or could I just switch the metal our for the glass somehow.
Oh yeah, one more question, if I go the the JY and they don't have any protege's, Ford escort power mirrors and moon roof should work, right? Are there any other cars who part a transfebale with the proteges.

First gens never had power seats. Thats wierd your car deosn't have power mirrors, the LX is supposed to, and you even have the switch. The mirrors on your car now must not be the ones that came on it from the factory. Personally, Im not a big fan of painting the interior. I keep mine shiney, black, and clean, and think it looks best that way. Cheesy paint in the interior is for ricers IMO. I guess black wouldn't be that bad tho, if it comes out right. There are special spray paints for plastic, Ive seen cans at WallyWorld. Defintiely get some MX-3 seats tho, and a moonroof fo sho. Those were two of my favorite modifications to my car by far. You have two options as to how you can do the moonroof swap. You can get the whole track assembly, that way you can have the retractable shroud, that everyone seems to take off later anyways because they always kept it open. Or you can just do it the easy way, and remove the part of you headliner that covers your sunroof now, and you will find 6 10mm nuts. Thats all that holds the panel in, and the glass is a direct bolt-on. Im not shur about the escort power mirrors, probably tho. And yes on the escort moonroof. That is where we usually get them from. Mercury Tracer LTS is the same thing as a Ford Escort GT, and you can get the moonroof from that too. If you haven't already, a short-throw shifter is a good interior mod. Or even just a new shift knob. Before I got my shortthrow, I hacked like 3 inches off of my shifter and put a chrome knob on there..kinda ghetto, but it works too.

If you do decide to get new carpet, It would be cool to see how well a layer of under-padding would work to make it softer. Just don't go all Honda Civic and paint your dash blue and your air vents white, nthing looks worse than a painted dash. It would be better to try and find one in the colour you want.

paint your vents red, dash orange, and your seats purple. then, add underglow neons, 3in tip from autozone, etc...fast, cheap, hot
