There's a switch in the latch assembly that controls the automatic (automatically lame) seatbelts, it can fail causing your seatbelts to not move. I think they shoulda just recalled them and replace the seatbelts with manuals at this point, man those automatic belts suck...

What a coinkidink, my driver's auto decapitiation device has just started acting up where I open the door and it won't move forward. Most of the time it works just fine, other times it just won't move. Never gets stuck mid-track or moves slow or anything though.

yeah, i just called the stealership and got an appointment to get mine fixed. my passenger side one doesn't want to work most of the time. anybody else taken theirs in? did it cost you anything? i know most recalls shouldn't cost you anything, but i've heard of some costing the customer some, but not a god aweful amount. just wanted to know if anybody has taken theirs in to get fixed yet?

I've decided that my car is a girl, she's picky as hell, won't listen to me, always wants to fight me, and when i give her presents it's never good enough and she always wants more.

My dad brought home info on it after I told him about it...ends up it was first released 04/10/98. States as follows:
"Mazda Motor Corperation has decided to conduct a special service program front door latch switch on 1990-1993 323, 1992-1993 MX3, and 1990-1993 Protege, beginning March 25, 1998.

Mazda determined that, under certain conditions, the passive shoulder belt buckle may stay at the rearmost position, even if the door is opened. This occurs as the grease, on the contact point of the front door latch switch, degrades over time.

This repair is to be made without charge to the vehicle owner, regardless of age or mileage of the vehicle."

There's VIN number ranges with it as well, part numbers, and other info such as:
"If the buckle is stuck other than in the lock position, refer to recall 72803 - Automatic seat belt." That is listed for the 323/MX-3 not the Protege.

However, '94 is not listed and the VIN range does not include my car. My Pro does have this problem, and my dad is going to see if he can get the recall to include my car. Don't know why it wouldn't anyway...

my '94 doesn't have any problems with the belts (other than that they often will not tighten) but if there's a recall and I can get the SOBs taken out for free, count me in... I can't stand them

they don't take the belts out, they replace the switch in the door latch.

That's the way it is...you can't expect them to source parts that are exempt and spend that much money/time to fix a small little switch issue.

ok, mazkid, i need your help. i know that your father works in a mazda dealership. i just got a call from them for taking my car into them to get the switch fixed, and they said that it has exphired. that they only do things up to 12 years later, but i think this is bull. i just got a carfax report, and as of 4-26-2006 they issued this safety recall for the switch. i think this guy is trying to trick me so they don't have to fix it. can you or your father look into this? i had to drive 140 miles one way to get this looked at and now they tell me tough ****, and now i can't get back over there for another week to get it, and i'm pissed. got any info?

Call MazdaUSA and explain what happened...just have info on the recall and tell them that that particular dealership refused to do the work. They'll help you out.
