mazdamotorsports.com asking for SSN to register?

So I was just trying to register over at mazdamotorsports.com, and the registration form is asking for my social security number. Why can they possibly want my SSN over there? Is it simply for identification verification? I'd sooner use my credit card number than give out my SSN.

It says either SSN or Team Support number, or something to that effect. I'm not totally sure that SSN means social security number, but that's about all I can come up with.

I registered without giving them my SSN. I didn't do it online, however. I sent in a paper copy. They want your SSN if you want to get support in the form of contingency money. You should be able to get parts and such without the SSN.

that would make sense, so they can tax your ass on the $$ winnings...
