"There's a hierarchy of insanity in motor sports. Normal people think all racers are crazy. Folks who race sedans think people in open-wheel cars are nuts. People who race cars of any kind think motorcycle racers are absolutely off theirs meds. But there's one group that everyone agrees is made up of the most extreme, the most daring, and absolutely craziest people in racing - rally racers."

I did at least 1/2 a year worth of research about my GTX swap. At that point - I knew exactly what I needed and didn't need to get the car running. I suggest you do the same since you have some time and it will make things go much more smoothly when you're actually doing the swap.

only problem i've seen is no one STILL has yet to post a good BPT guid whatsoever.

I still have many questions about the wiring of the BPT, and the routing of oil lines, vac lines and stuff like that. Most of that stuff is pretty damn important and could cause an engine failure if done incorrectly.

The funny thing is that I thought the same thing before I got into the swap myself. But if you're doing a BP --> BPT swap, things are pretty straightforward when you see them in front of you in terms of vacuum lines. If you know the basic operating principles of a turbo setup, the small changed that have to be made are once again pretty straightforward. It revolves around how much of the stock piping you're keeping. What type of BOV are you using (vent to atm or recirc ... etc)

Oil lines you don't have to touch at all if you have a BPT motor you are dropping in.

Coolant lines are also self explanatory. They are the same as the BP. The coolant line to the turbo is the only change and that guy burst on me ... but that's because it was cracked.

Fuel line have to be changed as the BPT fuel rail connects on the opposite side compared to an Escort GT one (in my case). All I had to do is use fuel hose and worm clamps in order to extend the fuel line and remove all those annoying Ford plastic clips. There are two lines to worry about - feed and return.

Wiring is a little tricky. If you have a full GTX harness, swap out the entire thing. If you are using your stock NA harness, take out the fuel rail harness on the BPT which is an 6 plug connector. Place your stock BP harness in there - it is quite easy. Plug and play at that point. Just extend the fuel pressure regualor solenoid wires and O2 sensor and leave the VICS solenoid hanging in somewhere. I ran my stock BP09 computer on the BPT motor like this and now I am running the BP55 GTX computer on the same NA harness. I didn't have problems with either. My BP09 gave me worse fuel economy but much better up top power due to the advanced timing. The car also doesn't like full throttle, low RPM applications with the BP09 computer due to the fuel maps. We will see if the timing issue is improved once I wire in my knock sensor this weekend. My EGTs were similar with both computers, perhaps a little higher with the BP55.

For you canadian boys and girls: THERE IS NO INJECTOR RESISTOR BOX - THE BOX IS FOR THE DAYTIME RUNNING LIGHTS.

As a matter of fact, you can probably simply remove the entire NA fuel rail assembly including the wiring harness and put it on the BPT but change your stock injectors to the 330ccs. This way you won't have to swap wiring harnesses or change fuel line locations.'

Other tricks? Use an RX7 VAF because it is the same model as the one on the BPT. The VAF is tuneable ... and can make a big difference depending on how you tune it. Use the appropriate throttle body (NA Auto for GTX harness and NA 5 spd for NA 5spd harness). Use the GTX clutch if it's in good shape - it will hold quite well. Make sure there is enough clearance between IC piping such that they don't rub and use silicone couplers to allow for movement - this is very important.

Use synthetic oil and turbo time. If you're using the NA computer, buy high grade fuel due to the timing advance - I always ran 94. Expect poor fuel economy and you won't pass emissions with the NA computer and 330cc injectors.

Anyways, this is just an introduction. Do your research and when you're in front of it, you will know what I am talking about

perhaps this should be moved to forced induction or engine swaps

congrats on getting the BPT dood....

As lex said there are alot of good resources here....

I am worried that I am gonna mess up a hose or something on mine... thats why I got the FSM.... I plan on going over stuff several times to make sure nothing is messed up.
The T3 BP MX-3 conversion has begun, and is taking forever & will kill me.

ive had my turbo on my usdm bp for just shy of a month now... the first full week (saturday to saturday) i didnt have ANY extra power, i had my stock exhaust on. then the next two weeks after i had my 3" straight pipe run i killed my tranny, now for the past week ive been driving my dads suzuki sidekick waiting for the weekend when i have time to swap my tranny out.

basically it is a VERY good idea to at least have a backup... fortunatly for me i picked up a tranny the day my tranny went (i wasent expecting it to go out so soon).

i sware my car is going to feel like a ROCKET when i get it on the road again... driving a 30second qt mi car to an approx mid high 14 second escort... a car that hardly goes around corners without a 2 wheel motion to a car that will cut any corner i throw at it... i cannot wait, saturday is not going to come quick enough.

I was under the impression that the BG trannies that come with the 1.8 DOHCs are strong enough for 400+ hp with just a upgraded clutch?! Assuming u don't power shift the hell out of it!

So long as you dont stunner shift everytime you drive it, the tranny will hold up for a while.

Isn't that the same as power shifting?!

so an upgraded g series tranny cannot handle the heavy stunner shifting either, i presume...

yes while of course i did drive it hard occationally i didnt speed shift any more than i did without the turbo... im a pretty responsible driver and not to mention the fact that my exhaust is WAY louder than the legal limit when im on it hard the last thing i want is a ticket for noise polution along with excessive acceleration (racing). the only thing that changed about my driving really was i downshifted to 3rd probably 4 or 5 more times a day (on the freeway) i think thats what actually destroyed mine i broke a shift fork then i was moving at a pretty good speed and the already damaged tranny could not take spinning so fast being already wounded... ill see when i get it out hopefully tomorrow.
