As I mentioned in another post, my brother owned a 96 Kia Sportage which he bought new. I could have sworn the stick shift tranny was going to break while still under warranty since it sounded so bad. They all sounded like that and it never broke. Not only that, the engine never had a single problem. His main problems were the radio buttons. The whole radio was replaced under warranty never to bother again and little pieces would come unglued and fixed by re-glueing. He owned it until about 2003 and only because of a newer car he found a good deal on. I heard it's a Mazda engine also but I can't remember if that was the case with his for sure. I never even looked.

Yeah Sportage has a variant of a Mazda engine.

I've seen Rios with Mazda 1.6s

The Sportage uses the 2.0L FE-3 twin cam...great engine, 170hp. My brother is buying one for his MX-6(and turboing it, naturally). They bolt in 3rd gen 626s and MX-6s(possibly BF 323 even).

So the 2nd gen BP intake manifold is better than the 1st gen? Does it just swap over? I know where there's a '96 Protege ES and I looked at the intake manifold briefly and it looked odd(tubes instead of the cast alluminum 1st gen style). If it works and produces more power I'd like to know ASAP so that I can pick it up before it's gone...

There was a great post on this, it does not produce more power, but it might help if you have regrinds or better cams.

I think Kia made all of their engines/trannies in-house using their horrible peice of **** casting machines they have which cause more flash than anything mazda produced.

So sure, it is a 2nd gen BP in design, but it is a peice of **** in quality of metals. I'd think their transmission casings would be more prone to cracking and their head/block also more prone to breaking than a mazda one.
But Wil, I remember you talking about removing the head, and the intake manifold was very different from the 1st and 2nd gen motor?? The 98 Sephia did change - and I have no idea if its still somewhat a BP design.... I've thought perhaps that's the one you got??

I've gotten three 2nd gen intake manifolds off the Sephia BP and they are all fairly clean castings (made by DES) - as good if not better than the 1st gen. Also, have pulled the oil pan off a Sephia to find the forged crank, mbsp, oil squirters, etc...

FlyinMiata used a Sephia block in their TrackDog - said it was no different than any other BP.....

Anyways, I'm fairly certain that the 95-7 Sephia BP is the same and as good as the 95-8 Protege BP. That being said I haven't pulled a head from a Sephia. FWIW the Mazda BP head castings, while not bad, are not the cleanest either.

bty mannydingo, the BP can be found in RS models as well. when I come across a Sephia at the junkyard; I don't look at the trim level, look at the engine to know for sure if its BP'd or not

and Mazkid, the 2nd gen BP is rated 117ftlbs @ 4000rpm vs 114ftlbs @ 4500rpm for the 1st gen. So slightly more torque at a lower rpm which is a good thing
the intake manifold is the reason(besides ecu tuning). its a bit of a pain to modify to work with the 1st gen mainly due to throttle body differences. do a search for my thread on dynoing the two manifolds to find more info.

lastly a funny pic that was posted on the miataforum

Naprotejay, if they are both BP's in the GS and RS Sephias, are they exactly the same or does one BP have something the other doesn't. As a matter of fact, is one a SOHC while the other is DOHC?

exactly the same.... I came across an RS at the junkyard not too long ago and happened to look at the motor - 2nd gen BP.

EDIT: 3 motors available in the 94-7 Sephia: 1994-1995.5 was the SOHC B6, replaced by the DOHC B6 and the DOHC BP in 1995.5-97

see this other good source of info here:
