Dont care what year you get it, that is your personal opinion in what type of body you like, or i have to said the front. As everybody said the LX is your better option, and how protegebob said a lot of people have the DX and in my case im trying converted in the LX. So try to search the LX version.

Another question for you all, what kind of mileage does the Protege LX get versus the DX, does it get 25-35mpg? Just to let ya know I'm planning on replacing the engine in my ford, since the rest of it's in such good shape, but would still like something that get's better gas mileage. The old beast, a Ford Bronco II 2.9L V6 get about 15-23mpg normally, but I am still thinking about replacing the engine though, since it's so nice the car only has 49k on it. I'll probabley either sell the Bronco, or keep the Bronco put in a new engine, and then get a Protege this summer.
