shift knob i got not built for mazda

i got a new shift knob for a buck from a friend, it doesnt fit the '90 protege threads. I'm pretty sure it was built for a Honda Prelude, the threads are 1) on the outside, not inside like on the stock 5 speed shift knob (i have the 5 speed) and 2) they're way too wide. is there some kind of adapter i could get maybe, or am i gonna have to do this custom? any suggestions for doing it custom as well? thanks

edit i guess this shoulda gone in the exterior/interior thread

The only thing you really could do is to drill and thread a hole through the side of the shift knob and get a screw to tighten it on the Protege shifter.

IMO it's not worth it. There are plenty of Mazda and other shift knobs that screw right on.

I agree with Mazkid, it's not worth you time and energy to drill the holes, tap them and use set screws to hold it on.

By the way the difference is this:

      Honda is 12 by 1/2"
      Mazda is 10 by 1/2"

The difference is the threads are larger from 12mm to 10mm on the Mazda.

heh alright i dunno whats up with these screws cause they're more than 12 mm too big. it looks like there are 3 pre-drilled out holes with threading in the side so i might be lucky there

Oh, well then it's just an aftermarket knob. If you get the right screws you are good to go. Still not something I'd do, but if you really like the knob then go for it.

The Mazda shift knob thread is M10 x 1.25 except for the MP3 which is M8 x 1.25.

i'm pretty sure that when this was new it had little plastic inserts that adapted to the right size of gearshift stick. anyone have extras of these lying around that i could get possibly?
