the N/A BP found in the American Protege (90-94) and Escort GT/LXE and Mercury Tracer LTS (91-96) make roughly 127hp and were rated around a mid 16 second 1/4 when they were hit the streets. The Protege LX is the BP here in America, the DX was the lower end but came in AWD. The Protege GT was only available in Canada and has the same BP the others have, just some interior and exterior additions.

the AWD turbo you are referring to here in the states was the Mazda 323GTX which was only produced in 88-89 and made roughly 123hp and probably sprints down a 1/4 near the same as the N/A BP. The better GTX model was Japanese only (and some european/aussie markets) and made 180hp. The GTR model was rated around 210hp. You can squeak mid 13s out of a stock gtx motor without breaking a sweat.

      Some engine codes:

      American Cars:
90-94 Protege/91-96 Ford Escort GT & LXE/Mercury Tracer LTS = 1.8 BP. The other variant of the BP you will find in protege's is the SOHC, B8.
      88-89 Mazda 323GTX = 1.6 B6t. The standard 323 had a b6.
95-?? Protege can have a 2nd generation model of the BP or a 1.5. This BP is also the same as the JDM N/A BP people keep seeing on ebay.

      Japanese Codes:

88-91? Mazda 323 GTX = 1.8 BPT. This is the GTX motor everyone keeps installing.

If you'd like a detailed listing, this wiki article will help, which explains where the BP-ZE codes come into play if you want to get technical.
