    just...

get a tachometer gauge cluster out of an LX or a DX equipped with the tach, swap out the speedometer guts, and it hooks right up, and looks alot cleaner than an aftermarket tach. Not the answer you were looking for but I did this to my 323 last weekend, and it looks pretty cool.

i'm agreeing with mazsport on this one that swap looks great and is very nice. be sure to change the bulbs over from your old one if they all work, i installed my new one and it had a dead bulb and was red instead of green

i also agree that that would look cleaner and i would love to do that but i dont have access to another mazda that has a tach, both of mine do not have tach's. and i would probly have to pay to get one from a junk yard and i would have to take the dash out. the tach i have is good and i got it on sale fr a good price and is easier to do in my mind. and i like the look of this tach.
        but thanks for the input.

        ps.
still looking for an answer to my original question.

For a tach install, besides hooking up the obvious, power (fuse box), ground (dashboard), you bring the feed wire through the firewall and splice it into the coil harness, i cant remember which wire...but there's only 2.

After that its mounting your tach, hope that helps!

            1. Power
            2. ground
            3. signal of the coil, which is positive is yellow/blue wire going to the coil from the igniter.

Or getting another gauge cluster from the junkyard, for me it cost 12.50 - 16.50 from an LX model; but thats in washington from a particular yard that charges 1/3 of the cost that other junkyards charge.

              junkyard parts

Junkyard parts are cheap, and it sounds like you have to pull the dash anyway for the tachometer that you bought. So seems like it would be better to have the factory one.

you dont have to pull the dash apart for a tach install, they're simple as ****. Just drill a hole through your a-pillar to run the wires on the side of your dash, you can tuck them in, there ya go! good job done!

yeh thats how i mounted it but i still can find this so called, port hole the instruction say to find. do i need to find this? because it gives places for all the wires to go and all that.

also does anyone know where the wire that goes to the ignition goes, i got the ignition out but i don't know where to put the wire.

ps. best investment ever(other then the car). Haynes manual.

port hole? it probably means any hole in the firewall, the one I used is fairly easy to see, you just need to punch out a black gromet and feed the wire through there

PS: if you do that, make sure you line the whole with tape or something so that the metal doesnt cut through the wire causing bad problems

PSS: if your looking head on in the engine bay, it's on the firewall to the right and near the top

You can also run your wires through your Engine Harness seal on the firewall, its on the left side near the bottom, its big with a huge chunk of wire coming out

Just poke a hole through it, feed it through the passengers side...then behind your console/dash the up through the side of your drivers side dash

Any special wiring needed for the tach function? I'm planning to do this soon.
