    Plans

    Okay, really simple.

I am buying a second car here shortly since my BG died. I have been tossing around the idea for a while about a RWD or AWD conversion.

RWD is out of the question, but the AWD is a possibility.

I have done my research, and know what would need to be done, plan on running a fuel cell, because I can't seem to find an AWD fuel tank. Found a drive shaft, and a rear axle assembly, and a GTX setup with everything needed. Only thing I would have to do is modify the spare tire well, reinforce the body where the axle would mount, and figure out the exhaust.

The question is what do you guys think. Do this as a side project, since I have a good rust free body?

Good and Bad opinions are welcome, since the project would be so different than just a normal motor swap, any reality checks are welcome to.

i think you'd have plenty of fun with a FWD BPT and an LSD... building an AWD protege seems kinda silly to me since you could just go out and find one. might take a while but they are out there.

spending the time building an AWD MX3, 323, Escort, etc would make more sense since it would be more unique.

i would but do you think an escort could handle the new torque placed on the body? the new torque associated with AWD?

the protege and scort had the same chassis. they have hte tx3 which is awd in australia. However it is an extensive and expensive project. For AWD I would stick to an AWD pro.

one in denver, 500. another in Minn, 800. they exist.
No car! I soldz it. Now I have a truck. I like it, but apparently it has a hard time keeping up with a slightly modified 4WD protege with half the hp. Neat.

but there are none here and I can't exactly go and get one right now, plus how hard is it to find one without rust?

people have been lucky. either of those I mentioned I can't tell, and haven't asked. but $500 is cheap. doesn't run he says. so, have a hauler pick it up, probably around 1000 to you. so $1500, you have your project chassis. the other is an auto, and runs good he says.

its worth the time and money to locate a 4wd instead of doing a conversion.

anyway, it's a moot point, I am not trying to buy a third car, I am trying to figure out what other people think is my best bet with this one, AWD or FWD GTX?

I vote ditch the heavy rice wheels and just swap in an NA BP with a couple bolt ons, put in a halfway decent suspension, get it aligned, and go drive it.

honestly the wheels aren't that heavy... the tires that are one them actually weigh more than the rims, na is "more reliable" from what I hear, but I am going turbo, one way or another, forced induction is the way

I already have a great suspension. all that i need is a different anti-swap bar, new bushings and ball joints, and the lx brake upgrade

the engine is my priority right now, if I do a GTX swap and stay FWD, i can be done in a few weekends, brakes and everything else can wait.

I guess the real question I should have put at the top is:

"When I buy my GTX engine, should I go AWD or stay FWD?"

Yeah, bushings, brakes, and ball joints are completely unimportant, especially when you're doubling the car's power.

I am also doubting the greatness of your suspension, and your wheels are definitely hurting your performance.

Good luck with your sweet plans.
