Busted driver's power window motor roll-call

Sweet well the driver's side window always went slooooooooow down and slooooooooooooow up with the needed extra push with the palm of your hand. Last night, rolled it down and..yeah.. moved a few cm to go up other then that when i got home i had to really pull on the top of the glass to get it back up... not good.

i get popping noises.. and have to wiggle the glass back and forth horizontally to make it go up.. to me it seems like a dead or almost dead motor.. i mean it bogs right down

If you have the popping noise, the socket drive on the motor is worn.
You have a few options as far as fixing or replacing it.

Buy a reman motor assembly and swap it in, this is just the motor and you must drill out the rivits on the stock motor, make sure the reman unit comes with a new gear or else it is useless to you.

You can swap in another front DS unit from another 1st gen Pro or a 2nd gen Escort/Tracer, but this is a very common problem and likely to already be a problem or shortly will.

You can take apart a front PS unit from another 1st gen Pro or 2nd gen Escort/Tracer and scavenge just the socket drive gear from the motor and swap that into your motor. The PS units get much less use, but will eventually have the same problem on the DS in time. Also, the motors are rivited together so taking them apart isn't exactly easy, but it's not hard either, just use appropriately sized hardware to bolt it back together.

Same as above, but try to source a new gear, if Mazda/Ford still makes it.

You can source a 3rd gen Escort/Tracer unit and swap it in. The 3rd gen Escort/Tracer uses a cable operated system, it is very slightly faster than the original but is smoother and quieter in its' operation. This will require a few minor mods but I think it's the best option and I've done it in three cars already (two of my own and one for a friend). The motor is not attached to the track and must be mounted near where the window crank would've been, you can use one of the stock holes there but two others will need to be made to mount the motor there. You will also have to elongate the lower track mounting hole in the door. The harness is the same as well as the window mount on the track.

With any of these options I would highly recommend giving all the new moving parts a good coating of lube.

Hey... I have had the power window problem in the past. My motor is still a little slow and I keep the tracks greased with White Lithium Grease but I did replace my sprocket. My window used to have to be helped and made a popping noise. I fixed it by tearing it down and swapping my sprocket. Here is a link to the stealership part number. It is well worth the investment. Good Luck!!!!
