Check if the speedo cable is lose or rattling alot? Mine sorta does this, but it's not enough to annoy me. (it barely moves up and down, possibly due to road bumps...).

..I know there's another issues if the speed is constantly moving around but I forgot the exact diagnoses

grease it ... it's jumping because the cable is binding inside the sheathing disconnect it @ both ends and use a thin spray type lube that will creep into the line (graphite works well same stuff as for door locks )

People always suggest the cable, but I have yet to ever have one go bad. I have however been through 3 speedo's in 25,000 some odd miles with the 4th killing itself in cold wheather. At least in Escorts and Tracers (more than likely Mazda's too) the actual speedo in the cluster itself is garbage. The needle is lightly sprung with a steel cup behind it. The part behind that where the cable attaches has a small bar magnet that turns the steel cup. The bushings in the speedo cup, and sometimes the needle part wear out and let the two peices touch and turn faster than it should.

To be fair every speedo I replace the old one's with have all had a 150,xxx some miles already. Those ricer indiglo guages greatly speed the wear as pulling the needle off, puts undo wear on the bushings.

P.S. The cable was replaced before the speedo and the needle was still cracked out.
