K-sports, ebay kit with some revalved koni' shocks.. there are different rear sway bar options.. you'll probably want to play with a larger rear bar or heavy rear spring rates... motor and trans has to stay stock but you can add an intake.. I believe you can do the full exhaust system including a header.. you can't remove an air bag, but if the car doesn't come equiped with one you can change out the steering wheel... you can change out rim and tire sizes but you are limited.. I believe ST you can only go to a 7.5" wide rim with I believe 225 rubber.. can't remember for sure.. I haven't paid much attention to different class rules in a while..
    Nope, you're right.

As for chipped ECUs... i actually think they are legal. It just can't be a programmable chip. I believe piggybacks are legal as well. When/if the shakeup happens, though, they're proposing that any ECU modifications will be legal.

In ST right now, though... power won't be an issue. A BP-powered car will make more power than the EF Civics that are currently dominating anyways. Intake, header, exhaust, call it a day. Concentrate the rest on tightening the loose nut behind the wheel, brakes, and suspension.

There are plenty of options in the suspension department for the BG chassis. Not only do you have the BG specific coilovers available, but with some very slight modification you can also run 3rd Gen (BJ) chassis coilovers. This opens you up to just about anything you would want including $5000 Motons. I can also help you with making rear camber plates for the BG if needed. Will Kalman ran a BG chassis (escort) in the old ST class 6-7 years ago and was competitive on the National level with it. My FSP car is based off of his ST setup so I can give you a few ideas about where you should start with spring rates and swaybars.

I haven't read much on the ECU allowance changes they are proposing, but if you want to spend the money my co-driver can probably build you a ST legal Megasquirt. His ECU was in the STS winning Miata last year as well as 6-7 other Miatas competing.

^Not to step on your toes, but the Cusco rear plates are still available, too.

Man all this is very good info. So as far as year to year is there a better protege to buy for weight or power reasons or are they all basically the same ? Obviously I want an bp equipped model.

The 90-94, non-sunroof models are the lightest. The BP only came in the LX model so for stock or ST class you would want an LX. For Street Prepared like I run you would want, essentially, a DX with BP and rear disc brake swap...or an LX with all the door panels and mirrors swapped for the non-powered stuff from the DX. Those type swaps aren't allowed in Stock or ST so you have to start with the LX. You could also run an Escort GT, but you wouldn't be eligible for Mazdaspeed contingency.

They are a bit heavier, but that is about the only real drawback. A lot of aftermarket stuff from the 1st Gens will fit the 2nd Gens, but they are kind of forgotten about in the aftermarket world. Things that are easily bought off the shelf for the 1st and 3rd Gens you may end up having to make yourself for the 2nd Gens. They still use the 1.8L BP motor and G series trans. If you have OBDII inspections in your area try to get one that is OBDI so you can have a little more freedom in modifications.
