Atomic, maybe try a VAF with a stiffer spring? I know the Celica Alltrac used a VAF that looks identical in shape/size to the ones out cars use. They were also turbo cars, so maybe the flapper spring will be different? No idea if it would really work, I'm just throwing out ideas.

I'm using an A-code now, it's been awesome until the last couple of days. Way better than the B-code or U/K hybrid we tried when we first build the car. Dunno if maybe it's due to the weather or whatever, but I guess I'll pull it apart when I have spare time and stay out of boost until then.

Do you have another large bodied vaf? Perhaps the k portion of that hybrid? Pull a spare apart to clean and polish, then swap the a-guts into it. The only difference is the a-guts, springs are identical. This way you stay mobile while prepping the VAF. Less rush to fix it right. Perhaps attempt to jam it while open, and see if there is anything for it to jam on. I feel that the cold weather is causing things to expand/contract as the temps change, and is causing the binding.

I have no other VAFs. I was wondering about it being caused by a temperature change, but it's been fine on colder days. I'm sure I can borrow a car from my parents, I was planning on doing that anyway when I pull the motor soon.

I wonder if the porsche 944 VAF would have a stiffer spring? It's made by Bosch, instead of Denso, so maybe they have different spring designs? Now I sort of wish I had pulled the VAF off of one of the 944's at the local junkyards like I had planned on doing. (I was going to buy it and take it apart to see how it was designed, and find the differences between it and the Denso VAF. But I never got around to doing it, and then he scrapped one of the cars out, and the other one is missing it's vaf, now.)

The A code would probably have the stiffest spring rate for all the Mazda B code VAFs, but like others are saying (and from personal experience as well) you can fit other VAFs from other manufacturers as long as they share the same voltage sweep (max out at 5v) and the pin order is correct. I used an MK3 Supra n/a VAF and it worked great for my car...been thinking about messing with it lately too since it's not on the car anymore.

I bet the best VAF for spring tension would be the Toyota variant though...Supra VAF for example is rated for a 200HP L6 engine, compared to the B code which is aroud 140hp iirc. I'd love to mess with an ST185 VAF since I think they have more HP than the Supra, or the RX7 turbo.

Personally it doesn't take much more than 2 hours to pop off the bottom VAF plate and get in there with some high grit sand paper and metal polish...my VAFs look brand new on the inside because of this lol. Just make sure you use a good RTV silicone to seal her up with (and be VERY light with the application). I had a "sticky" spot in my VAF because of too much RTV leaking into the body causing interference with the flapper door.
