Oh yeah, that's possible too. If it's that I'll just have to upugrade to the NA head. I may do that anyway if I can find one nearby for a suitable price.1990 Protege 4WD

I believe I have a water to combustion head gasket leak.
The vapor from the boiling overflow tank smells like combustion vapor, and the exhaust has a vaguely sweet smell. I don't see white smoke, but then I have a lot of exhaust leaks too, so it might be dissipated enough to be invisible.
Could this be anything else?
And if not, what else should I do while I have the head off?

Already replaced it.
Thermostat is new and works. Radiator is sound. I took it for a pressure test. Water pump is in good shape. I pulled it out and looked at it. Radiator and heater hoses are new. Turbo water hoses are new. Bypass pipe O-ring is new.
Basically the only hoses I haven't changed recently are the ones under the intake manifold.
While it overheats I have no heat from the vents, so I believe it to be a circulation problem. And the water keeps disappearing.1990 Protege 4WD

My head gasket was messed up between 2&3 and did the aa e thing you are describing. When I stop, it would go crazy out of the over flow basically draining the rad. But no milky oil and no steam. Threw me for a loop until I pulled the head. So I'm pretty sure it prob head gasket when you pull it.

After two weeks of debating with myself, I finally purchased some lug nuts. It was a tough call, but I ended up just getting some relatively cheap 7 sided black steel lugs. Was going to get some aluminum Rays, like I have on my 626, but they are a very tight fit with my wheels. I never thought lug nuts would be such a tough decision.sigpic

Did a bunch of work on the DD this weekend.
When the engine was missing so bad at start up, there was so much engine movement that it actually broke the exhaust system. It was rattling like crazy and leaking so I finally pulled it down and fixed it.
All the automatic door locks work now for the first time since I bought it.
My trunk has been leaking water since forever so I put some duct tape over the top seam of the tail lights. Who knows.
I pulled the block of wood out from under the VAF so I don't have to hear that rattle anymore. I was worried about boost cut but there doesn't seem to be a problem. I'm all quiet at stop lights now.
Edit-Put an empty oil container back in there. Boost cu.
I found some weirdness that I'll be looking into later on. No worries so far though. I can't help but feel like it's not as fast as it once was and am not sure what to do about it.Last edited by 1st Gen; 02-18-2013, 10:35 AM.1991 Protege LX with GTX swap, DD1990 4WD Protege with GTX swap, Project/garage decoration2006 Mazda 3 with 2.3, Her car1980 Ford F100 Short bed with 300ci 6 cylinder, work truck/home for moss

How to: http://teamzx2.com/threads/4402-Kema...ighlight=keman
Back in the day, there was a guy that did an intake dyno shootout to see which intake (out of 8 different ones tested) actually made the most power on the dyno. The Keman mod has actually been proven to make 3.7 hp and 1.3 lb-ft on a dyno, making it one of the best cold air intakes for the zx2. (and the only one that is a DIY. The rest were aftermarket ones.) The only other intake that is better is the hotshot intake, and that isn't made anymore. It also gained 3.7 hp, but it made an extra 3.8 lb-ft on the dyno.My family has lots of bg's!

Yo anyone who says they can feel a difference of 3-4 hp on something that makes like 130 is full of ****.
IDGAF about making/losing power, I just want to be able to use my FSTB, and this seemed like the easiest way to do it. The Keman mod is PVC pipe or whatever, right? Not feeling that ****.sigpic
