      Unfortunately, you're probably right. There just isn't that much to move around on a Protege suspension and that obviously was a hard impact. Was it a front or rear wheel?
      If it's a front, check out the ball joint, where it attaches to the control arm, and where that attaches to the chassis. Then check out the tie rod to ensure that it's not bent. If a rear, check the toe adjustment linkage for damage in addition to checking out the control arm and its mount points. If you have stock struts, there's no real room for camber to slip so you can pretty much eliminate that as a suspect.
      If none of that turns up anything, you're probably looking at subframe damage at a minimum. There are measurements in the Mazda service manual you can use to help figure that out but it'll be a PITA to do on a car that's not on a lift.
